THE INCREASING COST OF EDUCATION

Foroyaa Editorial: Published on Thursday, 20 September 2012

Parents and students are beginning to roam about in search of financial assistance to have their children enrolled in Upper Basic Schools, Senior Secondary Schools and tertiary institutions.

If one has to send three Children to Senior Secondary Schools one should expect to spend 18,000 dalasi on tuition and fees alone. When one considers uniform, lunch, transportation and other daily expenditures it becomes apparent that finance and not the sky is posing as a great threat to the education of students.

A father who is unemployed was in tears when he explained how impossible it has become for him to pay the fees of his oldest child to enable him to be enrolled at GTTI. He said his daughter had to drop out of school to look for a job as a maid to help pay the annual fees of the brother.

So far Foroyaa has a list of 26 students with good results who are searching for sponsorship. Anybody who could volunteer to support some of them should get in touch with Foroyaa to make your pledge. We will link you to students, parents and schools so that you could give practical effect to your pledges.

The Government should make it a requirement to schools to have on record all those who are dropping out of school for financial reasons.

There is general outcry over poor results. However little is being done to examine the situation of many students who are usually late for school or absent because of inability to meet transport cost or other costs. Many lack books and many have no opportunity to be given extra classes especially when they are enrolled in an afternoon session. A special study is needed to look into the plight of students from poor homes.
