5 family members die in Bansang river incident By Lamin SM Jawo in Janjangbureh Monday, August 06, 2012
Tragedy struck at Bush Town river side in Bansang in the early hours of Saturday when five family members perished after their vehicle, a Mitsubishi Pajero with registration number BJL 2246 D, plunged into the Bansang river while waiting for the ferry to cross to the other side. The deceased are one Malick Boye, the alkali of Kibiri village who is said to be 75; Incha Boye, Incha Gas Ceesay, 40 ; Horja Ceesay, 12, and Artou Ceesay, 10; wife, sister, daughter and son of the owner of the vehicle Malick Ceesay, the proprietor of Amsterdam Enterprise.
Speaking to Daily Observer at the scene of the incident, Dodou Jobe, the Bansang ferry supervisor said Malick Ceesay himself drove the vehicle up to the parking area at the river bank, switched off the engine and came out of the vehicle with one man. He said Malick was making a call with his cell phone when the car started moving and plunged into the river.
The Bansang police together with the communities helped to remove the victims from the water. They were then taken to Bansang Hospital, where they were all pronounced dead. The corpses were subsequently taken to their various villages for burial.

Five dead in Bansang-Dobo river accident
By Baboucarr Senghore Monday, August 06, 2012
Five people have died when a car in which they were travelling plunged into the river at the Bansang-Dobo crossing point in the Upper Fulladou West district of the Central River Region, witnesses said, as concern over safety at ferry terminals grow. The incident, which happened in the early hours of Saturday morning, claimed the lives of all five,, four of whom are from the same family. The fifth victim was identified as Malick Boye the alkalo of Kibiri village also in the Central River Region. Eyewitnesses said the victims were travelling back home after visiting relatives in the provinces, when their car (a Pajero with registration number BJL 2246 B), which came to the ferry terminal to cross, plunged into the river, reportedly due to “break failure.” The driver of the vehicle, one Malick Ceesay, said to be the head of the family, was the only survivor.
The other victims from the same family are identified as Hincha Boye, Hincha Gass Boye, Hoja Ceesay and Hatu Ceesay.

The Point Editorial: What went wrong in Bansang? Monday, August 06, 2012
The past few days have been a very sad moment for families of those who lost their loved ones in a tragic river accident at the Bansang-Dobo ferry crossing point in the Upper Fulladou West district of the Central River Region. Five people including four from the same family lost their lives in a sudden but avoidable accident at the Bansang-Dobo crossing point on Saturday morning. The pain caused by this incident is yet to wear off. And for most people, especially the families of the loved ones, the harrowing experience may take a lifetime to get over. But what is the cause of the accident? The Gambia Ports Authority (GPA), the police, the bereaved family; in fact, the general public, should have this question answered. The purpose of getting to the bottom of what happened is not to put the blame on anybody or institution; rather, such cathartic knowledge will help in the healing process, especially for close family members, as well as friends and colleagues of the victim. It will also enable the authorities concerned, such as the GPA, which is responsible for ferry services, to know what actually happened, so as to take appropriate measures to plug any loopholes in the operations of the ferry services, and prevent a recurrence of this type of accident at our ferry terminals. A number of factors could be at play here. Were workers at the terminal at the time of the incident careless? It may also be that not enough safety measures or practices are put in place at the terminal in Bansang.
It is in light of this that we once again renew our call for the management of the Gambia Ports Authority to put every feasible safety measure in place in all our terminals, whether big or small, so as to give the passengers crossing a reasonable degree of assurance that the ferries they board are perfectly safe. The authorities should maintain zero tolerance and a no-compromise attitude with regards to the safety and security of passengers, crew and cargo vessels using Gambian waterways. As we always emphasise on these pages, the GPA should ensure that the safety of the passengers plying the River Gambia in its ferries on a daily basis is given top priority. Though accidents do happen, some accidents could definitely have been avoided if more care had been taken to put in place the needed safety mechanisms in our ferry terminals.

I am sad to hear this having travelled myself over the same crossing on several occasions and visiting both Bansang and Bush Town and have met the Alakalo there. May all those who perished rest in perfect peace. This will undoubtedly affect so many people inside and outside of Fulladou West. If anything this accident is a warning for a proper terminal to be built in the area. The pulley method is outdated and is more a colonial method of ferry vehicle crossing.I do hope proper safety measures are brought into place to stop something like this from happening . It is a tragedy.
This is very sad mass. |
