Hmmmmmmmmmm............apparently the owners of the petrol & fuel station didn't think it necessary to take out any insurance, but there again as all motor vehicles must be insured in Gambia and the undisputed fact is that the fire originated from the engine area of the tanker then the tanker owners insurance company must pay,I find it very hard to believe that there was NO INSURANCE cover on anything,or perhaps there was, again in Gambia there are many unknowns where ownership and money are concerned.

This Gambian interviewed by the D.O. 10 days before should have been given a contract by the owners of Elton, this MAY have saved them some money:
Snippet from the D.O. interview:

"especially the gas station at the airport, banks, markets, MRC, and hotels. You will find that all these areas are not really fire proof protected. I approached all of these institutions when I was in the Gambia."

Toubab, it would be the duty of the vehicle insurance to pay all costs involved in this accident in an ideal world.

Insurance business is a goldmine for insurance companies in Gambia because they only collect money and have no responsibilities. I was once told that its almost impossible to get any compensation from them even if you are entitled to. One has to know influential people in order to get any compensation.
Many people are maimed and properties destroyed or lost in motor vehicle accidents yearly and I have never seen or heard about any person receiving compensation for even medical treatment.

I read your words Momodou,in the UK all you have to do is to fight long and hard to make them cough up anything, and as usual you loose out, but something is better than nothing. H.E. has a long way to go then to make Gambia a superpower !

Well now, Galp has obviously learnt lessons from the Elton Filling Station fire and associated costs involved after such an incident, maybe they have insurance, who knows, but it is likely that Gambian Insurance is a cash cow for business so cover is not the best.
What do you do if you are a business and wish to saveguard your investment that may be subject to fire ? Go to the specialists who have the equipment to deal speedily with your fire if it occours, yes, the Fire service give the firemen good training in dealing with fuel fires.
