From SOH, the Son of Haileh.

This article contained in All Africa is good and some extent covers good ground on the issue, however there is one ommitment which is central to this subject. No ruler in the world can expect to validate his or her mandate or political will if there is no active partcipation by the people.

So I ask, who is arresting people, Gambians or foreigners, who is translating the will of the ruling government, Gambians or foreigners? Who is dismissing public servants from their duties?

As Gambians we are good at criticizing others, yet when it comes to the crunch to self-criticize we seem all to ready to turn our heads the other way, why??!!

Is the NIA a necessary apparatus for stability of the nation or is it an apparatus for the survival of the APRC regime? Is the need to control what the people think and say a necessity? Is there a better and more humane way to rule the Gambia? Are all those arbitrary arrests necessary? How many of those arrested have actually died in detention? Sure we Gambians know the answers but are we really ready to face the bare truth?

I have said it many times before, the only real guarantee to peace and stability in Gambia is the very peaceful, passive and tolerant nature of Gambians, nothing else. If we Gambians were anything like Liberians or Ivorians to name a few (no prejudice meant), things would have been very different indeed.

Now that the AU is behind us and as we are about to enter the circus arena of Elections, surely we as Gambians, all Gambians can find ways to engage into gentler politics from the ruling party to the opposition and turn matters to a newer page free from all the culture of hatred and division that have been the order of the day since we took independence and moreso accentuated from 1994 onwards.
As Gambians we all know how eager we are to pursue the mentality of blind support for the sake of selfish personal gains. How many of us do actually remember when we used to say "Jawara be faw"? We are now doing the same thing all over again at a time when we know full well that things are not all well!! This in fact is the very first form of mental bondage we need to free ourselves from.

I will say this once more, my real worry comes from a very human dynamic, how long can we the Gambian people accept to be continually pushed into the corner? My fear comes from the time when people will start reacting and that's when the unthinkable may start to happen.

Like all things human, people after some time will get used to living in a state of fear but then people do get over their fears and eventually overcome their state of fear, that's the time when people would start to take matters into their own hands. That is then the time when all the servicemen and agents of the state would stop to matter as they would then become overwhelmed and dwarfed by the reaction, size and force of the people.

Let us all then take the opportunity now both ruling and opposition to bring about real democracy into being. We already have a good base to start with and that is our gentle nature as Gambians. Democracy can only supplement our nature and from there onwards really there's no need for the something like the NIA or to criminalize politics in Gambia.

We still have the time to make it happen because if we don't then we will have to live with the specter of the unknown.

Even a tiny little kitten will react if pushed against the corner. Just let us no forget that, we are only human after all.

Jah's Peace.
