The only Nigerian in the case Ephraim Michael Chidubem walked free from mile 2 today. I bet he is amazed after just receiving 50yrs in the Billion Dollar Cocaine Case. Perhaps it pays to have a Nigerian judiciary behind him :)

GAINAKO NEWS WITH USEFUL RECAPS FROM ITS ARCHIVES FOR;

RELATED BANTABA TOPICS;

THE POINT NEWS 10TH JANUARY 2012;

The Point News
quote:
"The Ambassador of the United State of America to The Gambia, Pamela Ann White, yesterday visited the exhibits store at the agency’s office in Banjul, where two and half tonnes of cocaine worth more than one billion dollars seized last year by the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDEA), are kept.

Ambassador Pamela White, accompanied by senior officials of the US Embassy in Banjul, was taken on a conducted tour of the store by senior officials of the NDEA and senior police officers including the Inspector General of Police, Yankuba Sonko.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the US diplomat’s visit, NDEA public relations officer ASP Abdoulie Ceesay told journalists that the ambassador wanted to view the exhibits store, where the drugs seized are being kept.

He said the US diplomat checked the drugs, and that everything was intact.

When asked by the journalists what was the reason or motive for the US diplomat’s visit to the exhibits store, PRO Ceesay said Ambassador White wanted to check the exhibits store to ensure that all the exhibits are intact, and also whether they are being properly stored.
He added that after the inspection, the Ambassador said she was satisfied with the way the exhibits were being kept.

According to PRO Ceesay, the Ambassador was very appreciative of the efforts of keeping the exhibits safely up to now."

http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/us-ambassador-visits-ndea-cocaine-store

Guys what exactly baffles me, was what interest the US ambassador has on that cocaine store?

Why the interest to see if the stuff were in tact?

What for? Was it bound for US? Or was it seized by US coast guards?

What is uncle sam's interest in this perticular store?

Maybe they want for find out if the chief drug baron has tampered wih any of it yet.

Why is this drugs still being kept in Banjul?

Despite the legal proceedings involved, this stuff should be brought in public view and burnt by now despite its worth in money.

The dangers it brings to the lives of mankind are far grater than the benefits. Therefore it should be burnt publicly so that do one gains or suffers as a result of it.

Gambians are new to drugs and for such large quantity of dangerous substances with in reach of the Mad Mog of Banjul,

am scared for welfare of our kids oh my God our kids!

IN MY OPINION IT IS BEING THAT OBSERVED THAT THE POINT NEWS APPEARS TO BE NOT RELIABLE AND MORE ENQUIRY REQUIRED FOR FOLLOWING REASONS;
  • Wonder how a case of this large scale magnitude and importance covered during week by The Point News only?

  • News is not ran or featured in pro-government media (GRTS & Daily Observer) and other National newspaper/media past 3-4days (11th January to weekend 13th January)? Merchandise of this nature and street value of a billion dollar cannot be dump like that?

  • Analysing the statements in report appear to indicate that there were no journalist that accompanied US Ambassador (according to report)? Refer to statement; "Ambassador Pamela White, accompanied by senior officials of the US Embassy in Banjul, was taken on a conducted tour of the store by senior officials of the NDEA and senior police officers including the Inspector General of Police, Yankuba Sonko."

  • Then what follows from report appear to be fed to reporter (amongst other journalists alleged to have been there)?

Kobo, it must be an embarrassing case for the APRC government and its mouth piece GRTS/Daily Observer to report on a foreign government trying to ascertain that the seized drugs are not tempered with.
Editors of newspapers choose whether or not to publish an article and the fact that only The Point news paper reported this does not make it unreliable. The Point is no radiokankang and I am sure they have their facts verified before this publication.

Momodou I think observations are valid and it would have been more interesting or reliable to hear from other journalists privy to this visit for inspection that they are intact and well secured

Good point (no pun intended !) but in relation to this affair,it is probably not wise to make waves,I am sure that any bigger picture that is present may have been considered You could not really expect the D.O. to cover the story on the front page.

Toubab 1020. We understand how dangerous cocaine is and what is in stock is a controlled substance from abuse. However in advance countries, especially US, UK amongst others, there are experts who administer these drugs for medication purposes to patients (including drug addicts) and this is good supply for them. It is high value pharmaceutical product for pharmacy industry and don't rule out top state secret to arrange very lucrative deals and traffic these to US; in guise of technical assistance to dispose it (where money is involved, double standards and capitalism)? Consider how 'blood diamonds' under state forfeiture are trafficked and Kleptocracy? Its unfortunate for victims and would be controversial, if I suggest that it would be hard to burn or throw away a billion dollar; so its good fortune for the Gambia government to legally get a deal (and revenue for state coffers), with countries like US that has vested interests in it? A practise or exercise like with disposing certain confiscated goods by government(including 'blood diamonds' and forfeited assets at Customs) but where does authority rest; Order of The President (after consultations at Cabinet level), Public Accounts Committee (for a debate with legislatures) and/ or Law Enforcement Agency (NDEA and central government)

A LITTLE RESEARCH DONE TO SUPPORT ARGUMENT AND REFER LINK HERE .

POINTS TO NOTE FROM LINK;
  • Cocaine is "an alkaloid obtained from the leaves of various species of Erythroxylon (coca plants) or produced synthetically; used as a topical anaesthetic for surgery of mucous membranes."

  • "Now classified as a Schedule II drug, cocaine has legitimate medical uses as well as a long history of recreational abuse. Administered by a licensed physician, the drug can be used as a local anesthetic for certain eye and ear problems and in some kinds of surgery."

  • "Because addiction involves so many different factors, prospects for individual addicts vary widely. A 2004 study found that recovered drug addicts often crave the drug for years and are at risk for relapse. However, research also has consistently shown that treatment can significantly reduce both drug abuse and subsequent criminal activity." Therefore certain states spend a healthy budget on public health to assist treatment of citizen drug addicts.

AUTHORITIES SHOULD CONSIDER TO CERTIFY MERCHANDISE AS CONFISCATED GOODS AND LEGALLY TRADE IT (FOR REVENUE) TO US OR UK FOR ITS PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY?

Interesting to see what happens on 5th March,bet everybody is busy reading their Laws of The Gambia (New edition, of course ) and associated quoted case law,even if the submission is allowed,I think that the outcome will be the same.

http://www.foroyaa.gm/modules/news/article.php?storyid=9038

"However, Touray’s application for a no case submission and the objection it received from the State is set for ruling on the 5th March, 2011."
