From the Son of Haileh. (SOH)

As we fast approach the AU summit and at the same time the Electoral Campaign period which will lead to September's elections, the whole government and the nation is engulfed into one fever after the other.

In my belief I am convinced that this is without doubt a delicate stage of our history and for the success of the AU summit, all of us Gambians and friends of the Gambia must unite, forget our differences and forge to produce the best result for this summit.

After the summit then will come the crunch of election politics. From the ruling party to the opposition we hear much....as usual, yet have we all paused for a while to ask ourselves what is the average Gambian person thinking? What are his or her worries and pre-occupations, what are his/her hopes, fears and others?

Have we really gone out of our way to seek that Gambian person's priorities or are we simply engaged in just beaming our minds, political agendas and preoccupations to a populace that nowadays very much needs to be heard and understood?

As political wisdom goes, when elections come, the only order of the day is to bombard the electorate with promises and promises, all the while knowing fully that much of it will not be kept and all destined to make one party or the other win. However there could be a happy medium by which both ruling and opposition parties can use as a general rule and this can be done with a good degree of sincerity: Genuinely Seek the wellbeing of the average Gambian and of the nation; This is what will keep the nation going into the sure path of stability and prosperity.

Much has been said of the developments that have taken place since over 10 years now, some people being for and others against. Despite where we stand on this issue, what must be understood is this: development can only be termed as thus if it filters through the greater segment of the Gambian population, but if in case it remains the privileged domain of a chosen few then whatever that will be deemed as development could end up as a curse of some kind, none of which is reassuring to the mind.

I therefore appeal to all politicians including our leaders in the ruling party to pause and give the above some thought. The nation is already seriously divided and fractured by politics. Now is the time to start a new phase of our history and that phase is what I'll call as the healing phase. God knows that the entire nation needs that healing process because at the end of the day we are the same and one people, all living in a very small nation with very limited resources. No matter how we may turn the dices, one way or the other we are inter-related. We therefore all have a sacrosanct duty, be we at the top of the power echelon or at the bottom of it, or totally out of it, our duty is to work for unity, peace, stability and for the process of a gentler and more humane political phase as any other way will be totally un-Gambian.

I am sure that the great majority of the Gambian people are peaceful, tolerant and know the importance of stability and progress, but what is even more important is for the political class to understand that we the people understand this wisdom.

Therefore as election day draws nearer, let us as Gambians remain united and peaceful and get on with the elections with a clear view as to what we the people want, as a nation first and as a people. Let us not be the slaves of the parties but in fact their masters in the sense that we need to express and direct our human priorities to them instead of our selfish personal tunnel-visioned desires. Only by having such a healthy pro-activity between electorate and parties could we really lead the nation's destiny into one that will work for the overall good of people and nation.

It could not be said enough that all things done peacefully, with clear vision and with respect to the other is always the surest value.

Jah's Peace to you all.
