Your argument regarding Palm Grove Hotel makes no sense to me. The hotels in Gambia have been struggling from the direct impact of the Global recession. Tourists tastes are changing towards all-inclusives, most Tourists are repeat visitors anyway. So Palm Grove Hotel being converted into barracks is just a sign of the times. After all it makes more economic since to change the usage of a building than to demolish and replace it with another one. Otherwise you'll be complaining that the APRC was wasting Gambian Tax payers money building new barracks.

Sister O, no hotel in the Gambia has suffered this fate apart from Palm Grove and let me tell you the story behind it; Palm Grove was siezed from its private and very enterprising owner extra-judicially and the government is inept and incompetent that they couldn't run it. This resulted to its gradual dilapidation to a point that it is no longer fit for purpose.

I don't know why you like fabricating stories in your head but the above is the truth.

Thanks

THIS PIECE EXTRACTED FROM FREEDOM NEWS;

"The true story about the demise of Gambia’s army couple

The circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of Gambia’s army couple is becoming a national discourse here. Mariama Camara, and her husband Alpha Jallow of the state guards were found lying dead in their room with gunshot wounds. This paper gathered that the couple were entangled into a marital crisis. Accusations of cheating, adultery, and extramarital affairs was prominent on their marriage.

Prior to the incident, the couple had strained relationship. Mr. Jallow, was monitoring Madam Camara’s daily text messages. He claimed that Camara was sleeping with another man.

On the day of the unfortunate incident, Mr. Jallow was exchanging text messages with Camara’s secret concubine posing as Mariama. He had Mariama’s cell phone at the time.

When Mariama walked into the room, he confronted her with accusations of cheating. Alpha even threatened to kill her, and kill himself. An altercation later emerged. Mariama then shot Alpha killing him on the spot before shooting herself on the stomach. They both died of gunshot wounds.

A married man has been arrested, and is under the custody of the Banjul police. He is helping the police with their investigations. This was the man exchanging text messages with Mariama’s husband."

Your explaination appears to be the most likely Nyarikangbanna, do we know anything about the person who was "managing" Palm Grove just before it collapsed ?,that would be quite interesting, long ago, the Palm Grove was great with an excellent beach, that was before sand mining in the wrong places caused it to lose its beach and therefore its customers !.

Turning hotels of any grade into military barracks is scary. Don't the Jammeh administration have better plans for using that good spot ? Or is it the same military affairs ? It appears Jammeh is too much into this and that security where everyone's life remains at risk. What kind of security are we about when citizens disappear without trace and others are tortured to death by the security forces ? Let Jammeh come out clean about the security claims. Gambians are not at all secured. It was also the security forces that shot down more than dozen young students to death in day light brutal encounter. Do we need all the prisons and gun gangs ?

You Guys really make me laugh. Who in their right minds wants to go on holiday and stay in a Hotel opposite a prison? Be it Mile 2 or Wormwood scrubs even if there is a stretch of beach nearby.

Whoever the owners were of Palm Grove Hotel their customer service was shoddy all I can see is they got some really turdy reviews. Just sample some of these, and then tell me whether or not a change of usage for this building is more economically prudent.

Rejoiner to the major shred.

What a waste of Human lives! It just goes to show were deceit and jealousy can lead too. Especially when tempers are raised and guns are easily accessible.

It is not exactly opposite the prison. Palm grove used to be one of the most vibrant hotels in the gambia even before the emergence of senegambia and kairaba hotels. It was extra-judicially confiscated in 1994 from its true owner and the government can't run it now. This is the truth. They are corrupt and inept.

Sister o, u need to stop fabricating stories in your head.

Thanks

Listen right stop picking at straws. Read the comments of people who stayed at the Hotel from 2002-2008 and listen to what they have to say and then revise your fabricated BS.

This is a period when it was under government control. The govt seized control of Palm Grove in 1994 shotly after the coup.

Get your head straight-up, sis

Thanks

OK I was talking long ago in the late eighties or early 1990's probably , then it was good ,owned I think, by a man called Cessay, would that be right ? the beach was good, with locally made sunshades of thatch, the lampshades were also locally made in basketwork,it was opposite the prison I agree, but it didn't detract at all from the hotel, I remember at that time there was a wooden statue outside the main gates to the prison of a white man who I was told was a governor there in colonial times and was still well respected many years later.

Nyari

Wake up Chum there are thousands of Gambians who have never none any other government than the APRC, that accounts for all young people under age of 21 consciously speaking.

Palm Grove Hotel was not fit for purpose and therefore Tourists voted with their feet business dried up. So what are you advocating to leave it as a monument forever. Its now turned into an Army Barracks. Now what is it you don't understand?

Anyway strategically and for Town and Planning purposes to have an Army Barracks in close proximity to a prison for one prisoners will think twice about escaping or is that your objection?

Nyari check out the GTA video to see that one dinosaur relic of the back in the day docile sterotypical yes massa day dream which Toubab seems to be reminscising over is dead and buried. You know the one, where Gambia was sold on GMTV or Good morning Britain in the early 90's as untouched Africa reminiscent to old colonial where the Africans no their place. They obediently wait on the crumbs of the Master table... and remember not to give the Porter more than a £1 coin. Whilst he drags your luggage by hand from the plane to the fence of the old airport.

Gambia's Tourism Product gives visitors greater choice and the variety than the limited choices they once had. It just seems to me that you Guys just need to go visit Gambia in 21st Century. By the way Guys you do realize that we have entered the second decade of the 21st Century? It just seems that some of you still stuck firmly in the 20th Century I've got news for that's been resigned to the history books.

Peace
