National News : PEOPLE DECRY THE HIGH COST OF LIVING IS THE PRESIDENT’S INTERVENTION THE SOLUTION? By Abdoulie G. Dibba on 17-08-11
Following the numerous complaints at our office by people of all works of life regarding the high cost of Living particularly in the month of Ramadan, this reporter was assigned to visit the Markets and Shops to find out the situation. This reporter visited the Brikama Market on Saturday 13th August 2011 and discovered that the prices of rice and cooking oil have increased sharply. Talking to retailers at the market on the price increase, they indicated that the increased in the prices of the goods is not their wish. They said they buy their stock in Banjul, pay transport cost, labour cost for the loading and off loading of the goods and other expenses like rent and licenses to the council. They indicated that the increase in the prices of rice and cooking oil is at the level of the wholesale which they have no control over. The retailers who spoke to this reporter indicated that there are different varieties of rice and therefore the prices differ. They said the variety that used to cost D750 called the American rice, now costs D830 and the price of the variety called Saddam is now D950.. In terms of cooking oil, the retailers indicated that the 20litres oil container which used cost between D585 to D650 is now costing D875. Regarding sugar, the retailers asserted that a bag of sugar now costs D1400. Asked by this reporter whether they (retailers) cannot apply the business principle of “seeking low profit and quick returns” by selling a cup of sugar or cooking oil at D6, the retailers pointed out that no one who buys sugar and oil at the current wholesale price could make profit by selling a cup of sugar or cooking oil at D6 per cup. They pointed out that anybody who does so would certainly sell at a loss. Following these developments, this reporter decided to interview some women to find out their views on the recent increases on the price of rice. According to Awa, the recent increase in the price of rice and cooking oil will aggravate their suffering. She asserted that the income of the average Gambian is very low compared to the cost of living. Awa noted the Government should help them with the instability of the prices. She told this reporter that a sizable bitter tomato now cost D5 in this Market (Brikama).
EDITOR’S NOTE It is urgent for the chamber of commerce to meet the President to find out where bulls, oil, rice and sugar could be bought at cheaper prices on whole sale basis so that the retail prices could be brought down. Every business person we meet encourage us to find out where the President is importing his commodities from to be able to sell at the prices he is selling for profit. The investigation continues.

As usual, no one cares about the average Gambian, just keep sending your remitances home to keep them going. |
