LAND DISPUTE IN UPPER SALOUM One Hospitalised, Sixteen Arrested, Fifteen Released
By Publisher on 06-07-11

Information reaching this paper has it that a land dispute erupted on Saturday 2nd July 2011 between Bunting and Njau Village in the Upper Saloum District Central River Region of the Gambia which led to the hospitalisation of one Omar Jaw and the arresting of Sixteen others.
As we go to press it is gathered that all those arrested have been released except one Badou Jaw who has been sent to remand at Janjanbureh prison on Monday 4th July 2011

According to sources, Omar who is deaf and dumb and could not hear what they (the people of Bunting were saying, started to communicate to them using sign language. This communication barrier sources said led to physical push and pull between Omar and the people from Bunting.
According to sources, during the physical push and pull, Omar was hit on the head with a cutlass, his left hand was broken and had stabs on his body.
Omar was said to have been rushed to Kaur health centre where he was finally referred to Farafenni General Hospital where he is currently hospitalized up to the time of going to press. His brother Badou is now imprisoned at Janjangbureh Prisons for allegedly provoking the Chief.
When contacted by this reporter on the Phone, Chief Malick Mbye indicated that he was called from his farm and told of the incident. He said when he went to the scene, he could not find them there and that when he went to the Njau Police Station, he was told that sixteen (16) people were arrested in connection to the incident.
Regarding the land dispute Chief Mbye asserted that he is surprised that the people of Njau are involved in this because the land dispute is between Kufar and Bunting and he said he cannot comment on the incident as of now.
Talking to this reporter on the issue,Matar Jaw who claimed to be the elder brother of Omar Jaw said the incident is a shock to them since he has to be hospitalised instead of being on the farm by now. Regarding the said land,Matarr indicated that even though he was born in the 50s, he found his father cultivating the said land and since then, no one claimed ownership of the land.
Matarr who appeared to be in a state of shock and had difficulty speaking, said their whole family is destabilized by the claim made by the people of Bunting that the land the Jaw family had used all these years was given to the people of Bunting by the Chief of the di According to sources, Omar left for his farm, on Saturday morning and as he was busy sowing strict Malick Mbye.
Regarding the sixteen arrestees, sources have it that the wife of Omar Jaw and seven others were arrested from Njau, one from Kufar and seven from Bunting.
Attempts to reach the Police PRO and the Governor of CRR during the weekend proved futile. This reporter had to wait until 5th July to get their side of the story.
