WADR: Mr. Darboe welcome to WADR?

Mr. Darboe: Welcome?

WADR: The elections are just at the corner November Presidential election and the Registration exercise; Voter registration exercise is going on but a lot of people have expressed concern that, there are not many Gambians coming out to register? You are on the ground and you've been monitoring the situation; what's your impression so far with regards Voter Registration exercise?

Mr. Darboe: ...as expected. I personally belief that this was due mainly to lack of proper sensitisation of the eligible process; ...

I belief that the ordinary would have the confident and obliged to register...

WADR: A lot of people attribute the low turn-out for the registration exercise for the fact that the opposition once again so far is divided? No positive sign yet that they will come together?

Nothing new in the Radio interview,no new ideas,no promises to the electorate on what he will do if elected, just the same old circle and a bit of blame for the "Registration exercise" Electors will not be interested in voting for someone new if that person dosn't promise them improvements in their way of life.

"Mr. Darboe: ...as expected. I personally belief that this was due mainly to lack of proper sensitisation of the eligible process; ... "

In other words, people are not interested, why should they be? what's in it for them? Nothing apparantly, so why change?.

3. FREEDOM NEWS Breaking News: Gambia: HAMAT BAH SAYS HE DOESN’T WANT TO ROCK THE OPPOSITION BOAT! DENYING REPRORTS THAT JAMMEH PAID FOR HIS 1996 DEPOSIT!

"“ They are spearheading a smear campaign against my person, including the NRP for the simple reason that we refused to join them. Our credibility is intact. Pa, you know me, I do not believe in blackmailing. We will not work with insincere, and dishonest opposition elements. A coalition should be based on truth, fair play, and sincerity. There is no sincerity among opposition parties here. If anyone tells you that the opposition is united, he, or she is deceiving you,” said Mr. Bah.

“I’m committed to contesting the Presidency come November on an NRP ticket. I will continue to stick to my beliefs, and principles even if they disagree with our position. There is no turning back on our stance. If they want to join us, and effect the change we believe in, they are more than welcome to join us,” said Mr. Bah while dashing the hope of an opposition merger come the 2011 elections.

My party recently sent its representative at the UDP proposed opposition meeting, which was postponed, but notwithstanding we want to make our position clear that we are not going to join them. They are free to come and join us,” Bah added."

Mr. Bah, a career hotelier, said he has learned his lessons from the previous merger his party reached with the opposition United Democratic Party led by Lawyer Ousainou Darboe. He said if he commits himself into any political venture, he will ensure that the NRP will adequately play its role in supporting its political partners. And he wonders why other parties are not willing to join him to dislodge Jammeh from power come November.

“We expect them to respect our position this time around. We do not see any sincerity among opposition leaders. Pa, in fact, in your own village, my supporters there told me that if I join the other parties they will not vote for me. They made it abundantly clear that they do not want me to form an alliance with the other parties. I will not compromise the interest of my party,” said Hamat Bah.

Mr. Bah maintains that he doesn’t want to rock the opposition boat—stressing that if he discloses what he knew about the other parties it would lead to their ultimate demise. He said the NRP doesn’t have time to pick on other parties. His party is focusing on the bigger picture—which is to salvage the country’s citizenry from Jammeh’s misrule, he noted. FREEDOM NEWS

THE POINT NEWS UDP leader on Gambian economy, other issues

Source: Picture: Ousainou Darboe "Monday, September 19, 2011

The leader of the opposition United Democratic Party has turned his focus on the economic situation of the country, stressing that the country’s economy as at now is not functioning as expected. Ousainou Darboe, who spoke in an interview with this reporter, at the weekend, said if that is not the case, the poverty level in the country would not have been at its peak.

“People are not able to take care of themselves because of the worse economic situation in this country. Frankly speaking, poverty is on the increase looking at the number of beggars on the streets, the high unemployment, among others,” Darboe said.

While citing the recent results of the Gambia Basic Education Certificate Examination, the UDP leader said quality education has also deteriorated in the country. “It is very disappointing to hear the news of the results. This shows that quality education is decreasing in the country, and these are the issues that any responsible government has to address,” he stated.

Commenting on the issue of an opposition alliance ahead of the 24th November presidential polls, Darboe stated that opposition parties are engaged in discussions, but declined to elaborate further. “I can only confirm that there were meetings. I don’t want to make any comment on the outcome of our meetings,” he said.

According to him, he will never lose hope on the possibility of an opposition alliance ahead of the November polls. “I am a man who is always optimistic and who looks at the brighter side of things, and I shall remain optimistic about the possibilities of a united front,” Darboe added.

Noting that his party respects a great deal the opinions of Gambians, Darboe said the UDP like all other registered political parties in the country will contest the elections.

“People tend to view political activities and the number of rallies as something very big, but rallies are not the only activity embarked upon by political parties,” he noted.

Commenting on his party’s preparations ahead of the polls, the UDP leader further stated that his party’s youth and women’s wings are out working tirelessly.

He said his party will work on, among others, the country’s economy, agriculture, and for a corruption-free Gambia. “Gambians are a proud people because even with poverty on the rise, they are still contented,” he added.

Darboe also stated that his party had, and will continue to create the enabling environment for women’s participation in politics. “We have fully fledged female and youth wings, and that shows what value the UDP places on women’s participation in politics. We are appealing, and will continue to appeal for them to join the opposition vanguard,” he declared.

1. FREEDOM Breaking News: Gambia: NO FLAG BEARER YET ON SATURDAY’S OPPOSITION TALKS!- NRP OPTS OUT FROM UDP PROPOSED ALLIANCE!!!!

2. THE POINT ‘NRP will not subscribe to UDP-Led Alliance’

"
Tuesday, September 20, 2011
In what appears as a big setback to the efforts by the opposition camp in the country to form a united front ahead of forthcoming presidential elections in November, Hamat Bah, leader of the opposition National Reconciliation Party, has stressed that his party will not subscribe to a United Democratic Party (UDP)-led alliance or a PDOIS proposed candidate.

Bah, who threw his weight behind a UDP-led alliance in the 2006 elections, after having lost to incumbent President Yahya Jammeh on two occasions (in 1996 and 2001), made this pronouncement in an interview with this reporter yesterday.

“For the past two years, we have made it very clear that we will sponsor a candidate in the forthcoming presidential election, and that is explicitly clear,” Bah said.

According to him, it is wrong to say that the NRP is frustrating the efforts of the opposition in their efforts to form a united front.

“What is happening is that our party’s position has been communicated to all political parties present at these meetings,” he added.

The NRP leader stated that when his party was invited by the UDP to a meeting to discuss the issue of an alliance, the NRP consulted its party supporters both at home and abroad for their views.

“While those aboard subscribed to the idea of joining a UDP-led alliance, those residing here in the Gambia objected to the idea of a UDP-led alliance and even the selection of a PDOIS proposed candidate.

“This matters a lot to us as a party, because the voters are more important to us than any other thing, as they are the ones that go to the polling stations to vote,” he noted.

Bah further stated that the NRP will consider a proposal different from the UDP proposal, but only after consultation with its party members.

For him, his party is open to an NRP-led alliance, which he said, is the most favorable thing ahead of the polls.

“This is not about Ousainou Darboe or Hamat Bah because it is beyond both of us. It is the interest of Gambians that is at stake. In 2006, over 60% of Gambians fail to vote. We have to reflect our minds honestly and sincerely. Why did they refuse to go and vote for our candidate we put forward under NRP/UDP alliance?” Bah asked.

A former Upper Saloum parliamentarian, Hamat Bah is of the view that the NRP party is not convinced that a UDP led alliance can unseat President Jammeh. “If we want to genuinely remove President Jammeh for the sake of Gambians and for the sake of regaining our dignity, we need to reconsider our position and push a way forward,” he stated.

He further stated that what the opposition camp in the country needs is a winning candidate and an alliance that can effect change. “NRP cannot go without participating in politics and my name will be on the ballot boxes and we will challenge the APRC,” he said, adding that the NRP will prove critics wrong come 24th November.

In conclusion, the NRP leader opined that as long as opposition parties are failing to use political solution for political problems, they will always fail. “We need to hold the bull by the horn and resolve our problems through political means because we are in a situation that demands that. We must be properly organized and well committed to the course,” he said."
