Finding and tracking people on the internet is easier, quicker than many people think. Sitting on a desk with your personal computer does not make you any safer than in the real world. Infact, its probably easier to find someone using the internet than trying to track or trace them in the real world. Having used the internet myself a while now, I have adopted certain browsing habits and techniques to keep myself safer in this virtual world. There are a lot of scams, fraud and identity cyber criminals out there and these numbers are growing. Below is my tips on keeping yourself safer online:
Step 1 (Time to not be you ) ------
Using the internet has taught me something, never be you on a virtual world. It may seem virtual, but being you could turn the situation a little more than a virtual fantasy.
unpersonalised contact : This is the first level of not being you on the internet. You have to disassociate yourself from your contact channels such as email, irc, usenets etc
1) Create a fake email address. ( This is very useful as it decreases the number of junk emails you will receive on your own personalised email addresses ). Make sure that the fake email address has no traceable attribute to you. E.g, if your name is Lamin , Lamin_coolio@hotmail.com wouldnt be recommended. I would recommend keywords that have no relativity to you, e.g, GhostFace@hotmail.com etc etc.
2) When registering this fake communication portal, do not enter any details about you at all. put everything as fake as you can. try just putting a bunch of random characters together (e.g, Name: sdlkfjfds )
Step 2 (Know your limits ) ------
Do not give out your personal information to anyone you do not trust. I recommend you dont post your real name on forums, finance details, address etc. You may be suprised how a small piece of info can make you easily traceable.
Communtity/Chat/Forums : Make sure that when you are registering on these you use your fake contact email address in Step 1.
Also be aware that Moderators and Administrators can pretty much see all your activities. So if you are sending someone a private message, try and keep it to reasonable limits, they can be seen by the administrators and moderators on most chat/forums etc platforms. Do not give out damning evidence about yourself on private messages ( they are not really that private) . Trust me, it can all be read. Most moderators/administrators actually do read your private messages on their log panel just to see whats going on in their forum/chat/blogs etc.
Step 3 ( making it a little harder to be traced )
Before i go on about the step 3. I will first give you a quick example of how easy it is to get traced on the internet. How ? the footprints are your IP ( internet protocol ) addresse . Each computer connected on the internet is assigned an IP address. These ip addresses can be traced back to your location, isp etc. Now say I am being a bad boy on some website and on their log activities, they find my IP address, all they simply need to do is traceroute that IP address. It will ping through differnt Layers of the internet network,( takes a few seconds only) e.g Level 3 etc all the way to my local level. i was chatting to someone on msn a few weeks back, he added me by random and wasnt been honest about who he is, I simply checked the packets coming to my pc through msdos and saw his IP. ran the traceroute command and traced him back to the isp tiscali brighton . It was that easy. Now say that was someone trying to find you, they know now that you are located in brighton on tiscali isp. all they have to do is call them, ask them who their DHCP server assigned that IP to. and thats it. the full address, details, etc all comes up.
Now, I bet you are asking, well, if my IP can so easily be traced, how can i make my self untraceable ?
Proxy ----- A proxy server is a computer that offers a computer network service to allow users to make indirect network connections to the internet or other network services
Think of a proxy server as a buffer . There are hundreds of thousands of free proxy servers you can use. Most Internet providers have their own proxy servers. Am sure some of you have tried accessing certain websites but are unable to. E.g, chinese cannot access some websites. This is because the proxy their internet is connected to is blocking certain ranges of website nameservers.
Now, you can use a proxy to mask your real IP address, i.e, your real IP address would not be showing on any internet service you are on. This makes it if not impossible, then very hard to be traced as these proxys have millions of users going thru them daily when connecting to the internet rather than connecting directly on the internet.
Sometimes I connect through a proxy in Mexico, Sweden or Taiwan. You can choose which proxy you wish to connect to. There are hundreds of thousands of them from any country.
There are many websites providing proxy IP addresses on the internet.
To connect via a proxy, simply click Tools on internet explorer, then select Options , then click the Tab Connections (on the top) , then click Lan settings ( on the bottom) . Tick use proxy server for you LAN. Now on address, this is where you enter the proxy IP address, my favourite is to connect via this proxy server 195.242.36.3:3128 . (its very fast) . So if you are using that swedish proxy server, enter 195.242.36.3 on address and enter 3128 on Port . And thats it!, click ok. and apply settings. You are now connected to the internet through a proxy via another country. You can test this e.g, go to google.com , you will notice that it changes to Google.se and the language might be swedish. So if you go on websites, forums, chat rooms etc, its that proxy ip that will be logged, not your real address
Note : dont bother using a proxy if you are on dial up. Dial up users are harder to trace as their IP address is not static ot dynamic . But dont be fooled, you can still be traced, its just a bit harder.
Step 3 (make use of available software) Firewalls : ------------ Firewalls are very useful in the annonyimity battle. Try and install a personal firewall, my favourite is the free and powerful Sygate Personal Firewall . This will block any atempts by other computers around the world to ping your computer. If your computer can be pinged( signal sent from one machine to another, like ping pong)by unauthorised computers, you are easy target for anything. Try and install a personal firewall. It is also very useful from blocking other computers in finding out more about you.
others : -------
If you are obsessed about security and staying annoymous, you could try VPN tunneling. Many websites offer that server for a few bucks.
Hope you find my Tips useful. Feel free to add any other tips on this thread.
Regards

MAVERIC you are great and kind. Weldone for this contribution. We are al security concious and wants to secure ourselves.
Look at what those stupid hackers have done to innocent civilians in the Gambia. Some of them are now in police custody only for wanting more information and communication.
Thanks once again for this. |

That's great advice - many thanks! I did try the Sygate thing but nothing happened .... the download window went white .... anyway, I'm always afraid of downloading because I was caught out that way before and ended up with a huge bill for dial ups I never used!!! |

MeMe, i just checked, looks like Symantec, the firm behind Norton AntiVirus has purchased Sygate and have now discontinued issueing the firewall. I already have a copy of it so i'll upload on my server later and can give you the link. Another good firewall also that is quite popular is Zone Alarm . You get charged for downloading on dial up ? it doesnt make sense. Please check with your isp because they could ripping you off. I dont know of any ISP in the united kingdom that charges for downloading, infact, most of them I believe provide unlimited bandwith so you can download as much as you want. Also, why dont you switch to NTL Broadband ? for only 9 quid a month, you get 1MBbit connection, which is atleast 25 times faster than dial up. Infact, Broadband is now cheaper than the old dial up as most ISP are trying to get rid of their old dial up service and hardwares. |

Yeah, it seems there was some virus that dialled other premium rate numbers while I was 'innocently' on-line and unaware of the bills that were mounting up ..... |

Seems like Apache is down. I checked their whois record and tried to access the company that host their website. Their website is down too. Also if you try to ping both nameserver 1 and 2 , you get no reply so I am guessing their host server is down and all other websites their host is hosting is down too. It could most likely be that their host is upgrading hardware or doing sunday system backups ^^. You could try again later i guess..
