This documentary shows the sad reality of arriving in western countries without "the right papers."

GRTS should show this documentary to all those young folks planning on taking perilous journeys at the expense of life, limb, and honor to reach Western shores.

Gambian Living in Squalor.

It is saddening to see loads of Gambians living in European forest in sub-human conditions.

These images, instead of worthless cultural jamborees, should be shown by the Gambian media to give young people an idea of what they are getting themselves into when they take those rag-tagged boats.

Prince, young people are fully aware of the risks but consider on balance those risks are better taken than to stay in Africa forever, its a chance of something different.

Touby

Life is not that simple which is your favorite mojo. And things are not black and white like you are stating that western world is better than i.e. africa. It depends on individual.

I gave you an example. I used to have a friend who was very conservative living in one of the western countries. His social circle was basically some folks from his homeland at the mosque. He was a good man, he was not socializing with others. He was happy with that social circle. I usually question why he was living in western world. I would talk about the things western world offer like job, educational opportunities, money, different social life, culture etc.. He wasn't able to answer. I guess, he came to west without any define expectation, he probably came because simple he assumed that life is better. I heard this guy went back to homeland and got married, have kids and living in very modest life. And I heard, as he was in western world his social circle was again was mosque. And, it looked like he finally realize what he liked and he found that in back home. Not everyone is same.

And I gave you, myself as an example. I think i got benefited a lot in terms of education, career and being in different countries and experiencing different culture. But sometimes, I compare my friends staying in homeland. They are with their family and relatives. I am much better than them in terms of wealth, life style in materialistic terms, but I have to travel once a year to see my relatives. And it is a regret for me, not being with them. I hear all the things they are doing, and i can't be part of it. I can't see my relatives whenever I want.

So, as mastercard advertising says, there are things money can't buy. Living in western world certainly have some advantages mostly better life style, but there are also non-materialistic things the immigrants people like me miss in their life and their value sometime more than what we have in western life. This could be facing discrimination, being alone, being powerless in someone else's country. It is all depends on individual, I see some very unhappy migrants in western world. As Prince pointed out, some of them they can't get basic needs. But even they do, by leaving their countries, they lose a lot and they usually do not realize what they lost. Or they realize but after many many years.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

turk, you maybe surprised but I agree with you,I think that the point I was trying to make was that those who have never experienced a world outside Africa can only dream what such a world is like, their dreams are OFTEN not accurate, those such as you have been educated and had a CHANCE to travel, MANY MANY Africans will never have that chance, because travel costs MONEY,money(correct money !) comes from work ,enterprise and luck .if you are from an underdeveloped part of Africa you cannot get money to travel so you rely on your dreams, which are OFTEN nothing like real situations.WEstern world is in many ways not the best, the SIMPLE life lived by many Africans is good as well, but those dreams keep returning............ time.......... and ..........time again.

Some migrants living in west and come to homeland for short visit do not help. I know many people who are struggling paying rent, bills, food etc. Yet, I remember those Albanians who work in Germany, coming home with the cars they can't afford, the clothes, accessories, they are giving impression that they are living in good life. The reality is different. Africans migrants coming home for visit, are not any different. Dress to impress.

This post sums up the main problem responsible for most of these ill advised migrations. Unemployed, and often youths with no skills or education, see a mirage of supposedly wealthy migrants coming home to spend an equivalent of a life times earning in a few weeks.

What they fail to understand is most of the uneducated fellows (especially migrants from the EU) who waste sooo much money in a few days are either love or drug peddlers.

Like Turk, i know people who are basically still living from hand to mouth doing menial jobs.... but they do not hesitate to max out their credit cards and take loans from sharks just to project an image that they have "arrived."

Do you guys know of an effective way to tell people that there is NO SHORTCUT TO INSTANT RICHES???

Thanks for your efforts Toubab, but unfortunately your suggestion is irrelevant to these youth. This is not a credit card debt issue.

At times, you appear to over-simplify issues by just repeating a bunch of "golden rules" from your hard drive. No offense intended, but you sir, could use a RAM upgrade.

Again a simple answer Prince,
No offence taken, quite right about the RAM issue I have just had to install vista because my 2000 system became dead,OK I know that's not the meaning of your words to me However kids will always be kids and must have the "Best" of things, money? who pays? dont worry about that ,you only are young once .
