POLICE DECLINE TO COMMENT ON MERCHELE BADJIE’S ARREST By Yaya Dampha The Public Relations Officer of the Gambia Police, ASP Aziz Bojang, has declined to confirm or refute reports that Mr. Merchele Badjie is in police custody. ASP Bojang’s failure to comment on the detention of Mr. Badjie came in the wake of information that Mr. Badjie was arrested and taken to the police headquarters where he is detained.
When this reporter contacted ASP Bojang on Monday and asked him whether Merchele is with the police, the police spokesperson said: “I will not comment on the issue.” He further stated that he will not be able to say if Mr. Badjie is in police custody and the reason that spurred his detention.
However, Foroyaa is informed that Badjie is arrested for allegedly evacuating some people with gunshot wounds from Cassamance. Merchele, who works for St. Joseph Family Farm in Bwiam, also coordinates a cross border project, which according to sources is aimed at raising the socio-economic status of the people of that region. It is also purported that he has tried to influence the rebels to lay down their weapons and work for the development of Cassamance.
