VENDORS AT BRIKAMA MARKET IN DILEMMA
By Fabakary B. Ceesay

Vendors at the “Triangular area” of the Brikama market are in a state of confusion following an edict from the Brikama Area Council, which ordered them to vacate the said site. The “Triangular area” is said to be the property of a prominent businessman, Alhagie Jawara.

The vendors, who claimed to be the bread winners of their families, said they were allocated the said site by the municipal authorities and have been paying rates to the council for the past four years. The evacuees further stated that they need to be relocated within the market; otherwise their socio-economic status will exacerbate. All the evacuees threw light on the negative effect the evacuation will have on them if they are not relocated.

Our reporter was at the scene when a man said to be from Brikama Area Council issued verbal warning to the vendors, urging them to demolish their structures and vacate the site within five days or face the penalty. The official letter from the Brikama Area Council is dated 4th May 2006. The letter reads: “On behalf of management of council, I write to give you people fourteen (14) days notice with effect from 5th May 2006 to leave this leasehold property of Alhagie Jawara. I look forward to your cooperation. Any inconvenience is deeply regretted”.

Meanwhile, the owner of the place, Alhagie Jawara, confirmed that he owned the place and went further to say that he did not know who allocated the site to the vendors. He said he has been patient with the vendors for the past four years, noting that he has never demanded a butut from them. He said he needs his leasehold property.

The Public Relations Officer of the Brikama Area Council, Sering Modou Joof, said the vendors were allocated the place by “the municipality and that they were paying rates to the council for the past years”. The spokesperson emphasized that the council is doing all it could to relocate the vendors within the market as soon as possible.
