Background review from related Bantaba Gambian politics topic MATHEW K.JALLOW ON RADIO FREEDOM under http://www.gambia.dk/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10494
UPDATES from;
1. Freedom on-line newspaper Gambia: The Challenges of Balangbaa under http://www.freedomnewspaper.com/Homepage/tabid/36/mid/367/newsid367/6026/Gambia--The-Challenges-of-Balangbaa-/Default.aspx
2. SUPPLEMENTARY NEWS EXTRACTED FROM FREEDOM "Dictator positions Ammo Tank at the Radio Syd junction To Quell Balangba Day";
"BANJUL, THE GAMBIA—Pa, the incessant stories detailing the misrule of the Kanilai Monster is causing him much sleepless nights in Banjul. Jammeh is at a point now where he is for the first time in his rule, able to envisage a Gambia without him at the helm. He has become aware that he has lost a lot of support due to the various stories the Gambian people have become aware of. The primary cause of this loss of support has been the numerous arrests carried out by the NDEA on the basis of bogus charges against outstanding Gambian citizens. The average Gambian now knows that Jammeh is corrupt, brutal, and unjust.
On Thursday, he deploys heavily armed troops all around Banjul. He positioned a tank at the Radio Syd junction. This show of force is of course meant to intimidate Gambians and discourage the planned Balangba protests. But the real reason for this is that some armed people were observed in the vicinity of Kanilai.
He thinks these are the MFDC faction. But informed people think otherwise. I can also tell you that Jammeh is now afraid to go to Kanilai. His movements are now very restricted. International travel is now totally out of the question for him as no President wants to be seen next to Jammeh. "
3. Gainako on-line news reportsThe Challenges of Balangbaa; As Jammeh Cancels Saturday's No Driving Ban! under http://www.gainako.com/news/news/2011/03/26/the-challenges-of-balangbaa-as-jammeh-cancels-saturdays-no-driving-ban.html
MOBILISATION AND CAMPAIGNING FOR CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE IS A FUTILE EXERCISE, INEFFECTIVE AGAINST JAMMEH/APRC AND OPPOSITION (ALL OPPONENTS) WILL NEVER ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS; TO GET RID OF JAMMEH/APRC
IF MATHEW K. JALLOW CAN GARNER A NATIONAL SUPPORT THROUGH OONLINE MEDIA CAMPAIGN; WHY IT IS DIFFICULT TO DEVELOPE A NATIONAL STRATEGY WITH CONCERTED EFFORTS BY ALL OPPONENTS TO MOBILISED AGAINST JAMMEH/APRC 2011; RATHER THAN SURRENDERING IT TO FEW INDIVIDUALS OR GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS; LACKING GOOD LEADERSHIP, TACTICAL SKILLS, SOUND STRATEGIES AND CLEAR VISIONS, HIGH-JACKING OUR (ALL OPPONENTS) NATIONAL CAUSE TOWARDS THE COMMON GOOD
I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY BETTER PROPOSALS AND STRATEGIES BETTER THAN N.A.D.D FORMAT AND/OR P.D.O.I.S AGENDA 2011 ON THE TABLE; FOR AN EFFECTIVE UNITED NATIONAL FRONT TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM
LOOK AT THIS NONSENSE AS QUOTE FROM MATHEW K. JALLOW READ AS FOLLOWS "The Coalition for Civil Disobedience in The Gambia, whose Balangbaa campaign can claim some small victory, is a growing movement of Gambians who are vehemently opposed to Yahya Jammeh's regime to want to see it collapse. As a movement of patriotic Gambians, our unshakable and unapologetic believe that Yahya Jammeh's regime must be taken out by ANY peaceful means necessary, sets us apart from the United Democratic Party (UDP) and theSocialist/Communist, the Party of People Democratic Organization for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), who remain entrenched in the belief in elections are the only route to political change in our country."
BRANDING P.D.O.I.S "SOCIALISM/COMMUNISM" IS FALLACY; DECEPTIVE, MISLEADING AND FALSE IF P.D.O.I.S IS NOT AMONGST NATION'S BEST DEMOCRATIC PARTIES WITH CLEAR VISIONS AND ITS LEADERS ARE NOT TRUE DEMOCRATS THERE ISN'T ANY THEN

"... sets us apart from the United Democratic Party (UDP) and theSocialist/Communist, the Party of People Democratic Organization for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), who remain entrenched in the belief in elections are the only route to political change in our country."
It is disheartening, and indeed malicious to ascribe to PDOIS positions that they do not hold, and infer to them statements that they do not make. And this seems to be the pattern that has been grossly exploited by their detractors.
I have been reading Foroyaa since the inception of PDOIS, and I have read most of the prolific expositions on the Gambian economy, the political situation, the society and our culture, that has been deliberated by Halifa and PDOIS since they came into the political scene.
I have also listened to the numerous speeches given by PDOIS and Halifa in political campaigns, symposiums and in cassettes. But I have never heard or read anywhere where Halifa OR PDOIS expressively made the statement that they are communists.
The only reference that can be attributed to PDOIS as a Socialist party is by the Socialism in the PDOIS acronym.
But without clearly trying to understand the delineation of the concept within the context of our Gambian economy, and the fundamental socialist principles that lend credence to its viability, people erroneously make comments as the one above.
PDOIS, since from the beginning has conceptualized their position on the Gambian economy, and the type of economic system they would facilitate if they take over the reins of power.
They have also conceptualized their position on the Gambian political situation, and the type of political system they would facilitate if they take over the reins of power.
Likewise they have conceptualized on the social situation as well as our culture, and have taken predetermined positions of what they will do if they take over the reins of power.
This is all in the public domain. How then can some people turn around and accuse them of being Communist, of being this and that, without taking the trouble to challenge them on the principle positions they have already established?
Based on its acronym there are three core principles that define the party, PDOIS.
The first principle is People's Democracy. And to do justice to this principle, I would let PDOIS to define it:
"... the use of the word people before democracy may appear as a tautology. However, it aims to differentiate a type of democracy where people are kept ignorant and are then subjected to patronage and intimidation to vote for leaders who deny them freedom of expression and association, and exclude them entirely from the decision making process.
"Such people become a sovereign people in words but subjects in their own homeland in deed. ...PDOIS coined the phrase People's Democracy as a matter of emphasis that sovereignty or power shall reside in the people under its leadership".
The second principle is Independence. Again to do justice to this principle, I would let the party define it:
"...PDOIS recognizes that the declaration of Independence and the establishment of a Republic are not sufficient to guarantee a self determined existence for a nation. A nation requires self determination in its civil, political, social, economic and cultural domains before it could affirm its existence as an Independent Nation.
".... PDOIS is therefore committed to initiating the instruments, institutions and practices that would prevent the country from losing its sovereignty, and would in fact foster its unity with other African countries to ensure that the collective sovereignty of the African Nation is safeguarded...."
The third principle is Socialism. This is PDOIS''s most misunderstood principle, and the basis of the many contentions where the above quoted remarks seems to gain prominence.
In response to this issue, I have read where Halifa has deliberated in detail the concepts of Capitalism, Communism and Socialism and the fundamental principles that underlines these systems.
Notwithstanding, in most capitalist economies there is hardly a distinction between its capitalist and socialist content, as the principles seems to compliment and augment each other. This is evident in the many social and welfare programs; and also the many regulatory schemes determined to guide and sustain such economies, which goes against the dictates of a pure classical capitalist economy.
We have seen governments bailing out private entities to prevent a collapse of the whole market. We have seen governments subsidizing their farmer's produce to prevent a distortion in the markets. We have seen many elaborate schemes within a capitalist economy, that also has features of the principles that we normally associate with socialism.
Against this backdrop, this is how PDOIS define and relate to the concept of Socialism in their acronym:
"...The Gambia has an informal economy which enables small producers to sell their goods to small retailers who take the goods to weekly markets in the Gambia and across the border to live from hand to mouth.
"There is also a cooperative sector at the level of savings and loans societies or groups which serve as micro credit facilities for the informal sector. They also operate at the village level both to assist individual farmers to harvest crops and to enable families or communities or villagers to engage in large scale farming in common for mutual benefit.
"There is the private sector which contributes 577 Million (dalasis) in Corporate tax to Government revenue. The government depends largely on consumption based tax affecting mainly imported goods to generate revenue...."
The above is part of a detailed explanation of the state of the Gambian economy, and establishes the basis for PDOIS to conceptualize on its economic policies.
"... PDOIS holds that a non productive state which depends entirely on taxation of private enterprises and the income of workers to be able to provide social services and infrastructural development is unsustainable in the 21st Century. Such a state would over tax the private sector and constrict its development, creates unemployment, hamper the provision of social services, reduce the growth of infrastructural development and increase poverty.
"PDOIS therefore stands for the growth of a public sector that will coexist with the other sectors that are serving national development as the avenue to promote income generation to eradicate poverty, enhance social services on a sustainable basis, and promote infrastructural development.
"PDOIS aims to use every avenue to expand the growth of Sovereign National wealth by prospecting for oil and other minerals as well as ensuring financial discipline in all public corporations.
"THIS COMMITMENT TO EXPAND SOVEREIGN NATIONAL WEALTH TO ENSURE ADEQUATE REVENUE GENERATION TO PROVIDE SOCIAL WEALTH AND ENSURE INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT ON A SUSTAINABLE BASIS WITHOUT SCRAPING THE BACK OF THE PEOPLE THROUGH TAXATION OR STIFLING THE OTHER PRODUCTIVE SECTORS IS: the SOCIALIST content of PDOIS's Development strategy."
What is so radical about PDOIS'S development strategy as encapsulated in the above quotations, that the person quoted above should deride them as communists?
What is the alternative to what PDOIS has to offer?
Before one try to change a government, one must develop the requisite discipline to build the political, social, economic and cultural programs that will replace what you want to change.
PDOIS has put everything on the table. People should be sincere and challenge them on what is their position, and what they have said.

Many thanks Sankalanka for holding brief, executing a citizen's duty and defending P.D.O.I.S IDEALS; VISIONS, PRINCIPLES, POLICIES, PROGRAMMES, BEING IN PLACE, PRACTISED AND DEMONSTRATED IN SERVICE OF THE NATION. Those statements are irrefutable and clears beyond reasonable doubt ALL misconceptions, deliberate malicious attacks, distortions, smearing and cheap remarks from detractors to dis-credit P.D.O.I.S & ITS LEADERS.
I THINK YOU SHOULD FORWARD IT TO OTHER ON-LINE FORUMS AND MEDIA TO SET THE RECORDS STRAIGHT AND ATTENTION OF MATHEW K. JALLOW
ON WHICH FRONT WAS MATHEW K. JALLOW 2006 WITH; "the tribalism must cease" LET UDP "BLEW ITSELF" (I.E. MATHEW K.JALLOW'S RHETORIC) IF THEY HATE HIS CRITICISMS AGAINST THEM AND PARTY LEADER AS "UN-FIT"; FOR N.R.P AND U.D.P ARE DIVORCE
THE OTHER BATTLE IS FOR UDP VERSUS MATHEW K. JALLOW

It is very unusual but I have to admit PDOIS is the only party with an ideology, intellectual capability, programmes, policies and principles and; one of the principle is; People's Democracy. However, I would let Halifa Sallah to comment on People's Democracy and Gambian reality.
Halifa Salah
quote: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

"Power of the people, by the people and for the people" CONTRADICTS YOUR DECLARATIONS OF LEGITIMISING; "UDP is a government in waiting" and Leader Lawyer Darbo President in waiting; which Mathew K. Jallow challenged
DEMOCRATIC IDEALS, SOVEREIGNTY, EMPOWERMENT OF PEOPLE, & "ELECTIONS"; THE RIGHT TO VOTE, TO GUARANTEE THE FRANCHISE OF EVERY CITIZEN THROUGH BALLOT-BOX" ARE BED-ROCK OF WHAT P.D.O.I.S ADVOCATES. IF YOU WANT TO TEST, CHALLENGE OR PROOF ME WRONG; PLEASE REVIEW ALL PROPOSALS THEY HAVE TENDERED AND OFFERED TO ALL CITIZENS IN ITS AGENDA 2011 TO "SALVAGE THE COUNTRY" FROM JAMMEH/AP.R.C AND/OR FOR DECISIONS TO DECIDE "DESTINY OF THE COUNTRY"
