Dailynews Editorial: IEC Should Not Mute What about the General Registration? Wednesday, March 02, 2011
As some Gambian political parties flex their muscles for the fast approaching 2011 presidential election, the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) position on the preparation for the general registration of voters remains unknown to the public. The IEC should not be mute. The IEC is yet to clear the doubt of the nation about what it is up to for the 2011 elections. Being the body responsible for elections in the country, it should avoid creating doubts, which lead to speculations and rumours. People are frequently asking, whether the kingship campaign by some APRC supporters and the traditional chiefs have not slowed IEC’s decision to commence the general registration. This question can only be answered by the electoral body. They should act or tell the nation what their problems are. It has been reiterated that election is a conflict resolution mechanism, then the voters should be made confident by the electoral commission, through actions or tell them what their obstacles are. Despite the kingship campaign, the APRC national mobiliser does talk about his party’s optimism to make a landslide victory in 2011 presidential election. The United Democratic Party had toured Kiang West and recently met with the people in Sami Medina, with reports of massive defection from the ruling party. People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) is consulting people on its Agenda 2011 in different parts of the country. National Reconciliation Party (NRP) has shown its readiness to be part of the 2011 race. The Gambia Democratic Party (GDP) has also recently expressed the need for change in The Gambia, thus indicating their interest in Gambia’s political life. The people’s Progressive Party (PPP) is not also silent about the political future of the country. NCP and NDAM are also said to be existing and registered parties that may be interested to join the race. The political muscle flexing by parties should be synchronized with the process of leveling the political field by the electoral commission. Those who know the price of democracy would in no moment hesitate to take up their responsibility without waiting for any pressure and disregarding no vacuum to be filled to overcome challenges in their duties. This is what is expected of the IEC. As an independent body, the continuous silence of the IEC is not a solution to the fluctuating political temperature of the country. People’s hope in the IEC is what can galvanize its integrity. The 2011 presidential race is not expected to be a drama, neither voters nor the IEC should be spectators and the Gambia should not be turned into a stage for abnormalities. This year’s election should be a turning point in the history making process of The Gambia with the IEC at the centre of organising and refereeing for good. The IEC did not owe Gambians silence but a clear explanation or action through exercising what all political parties and voters are waiting them for. Gambians, both in the country and abroad and the international community are with all ears for the 2011 elections.

Captain Jammeh placed the IEC to steal votes while playing the cool as though a body to trust. Rigging elections in Gambia is done by process. As captain Yaya Jammeh appears on Gambia TV screens, election is being rigged full time in forceful operation.
Everyday is vote stealing in Gambia. |
