Darboe takes IEC to task
In the build-up to the forthcoming Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government elections, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, Secretary General and party leader of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), has emphasized the need for the Independent Electoral Commission, (IEC), to speak out on its plans and preparations, especially with regard to the general voter registration.
In an exclusive interview with this reporter, Darboe said that since the IEC conducted a mock voter registration trial in the Greater Banjul Area to test the effectiveness of the proposed biometric voter registration, the UDP has not heard from the Commission again, noting that the UDP expected the IEC to commence voter registration since January this year.
"There is no doubt that the IEC is having funding problems, but we hope that this will be resolved so as to ensure the conduct of a credible voter registration, which will be made available to all the political parties.
"This is important because the credibility of any election rests on the credibility of the voter registration process. If that is credible and transparent, then one can begin the process of having a transparent process," Darboe added.
According to the UDP leader, those who said that the opposition will not make it in the coming elections are dreaming, as the opposition has the potential to effect change, as already demonstrated in Kiang and other parts of the country. "The opposition does not have access to the state media. If we were having access to the state broadcaster, then the recent mass defection of over one hundred APRC supporters to the UDP should also be shown on television," Darboe added.
In Darboe's view, there is not only the possibility of an opposition alliance, but there is also a higher probability of an opposition alliance. "We have the ability to unseat President Jammeh in 2011, and we will do it," Darboe continued.
"The IEC really cannot sponsor political parties. It is an umpire during elections, so it does not support political parties. It has no mandate to support or provide funding for political parties, and I do not think other IEC in other parts of the world have that mandate too," he went on.
The leader of the largest opposition party in the country underscored the need for a Democracy Fund for The Gambia, which he said was recommended by the former chairman of the IEC, Bishop Tilewa Johnson, adding that this will enable political parties to benefit from such funds.

Politics of opportunism is all about romanticising, praise singing, clapping of hands and funfair
WHAT TO APPLAUD Nothing new is said but on VERY SERIOUS NOTE AS QUOTED;
"In Darboe's view, there is not only the possibility of an opposition alliance, but there is also a higher probability of an opposition alliance. "We have the ability to unseat President Jammeh in 2011, and we will do it," Darboe continued."

Kobo or Malick, why do you pretend to laugh when there is nothing worth laughing about? Laughingly If somebody finds a statement appealing, what has that got to do with your objection of him or her expressing such sentiment? You are very funny dude...You reveal your low level of tolerance or clownish politics.. I guess you have forgotten about your own romanticism and politics of opportunism and saintly praise singing of your Pan-Africanist Mr Africa.. Laugh |

Just as always I love all opposition political parties I just happen to agree with the UDP'S approach and much more they happen to be closer to our collective goal which is a peaceful fulfillment of the removal of a tyrant by the people's power not by force but by voting Jammeh out.Yahya Jammeh has shown Gambians he cares less about the plight of the people. Most resent was the the criminal detention of KMC Leader Mai Fatty's parents by the Jammeh regime.What have they done to deserve being detained? Is it now a crime to show support to one's son?
We all know commissioner Omar Khan is a womaniser Prostitute and hard core bandit. I have worked with him and I knew him more than his wives.This are the kind of Gambian that should be send to the gallow if we had no religion. They served Jawara with corruption and now are bowing to Jammeh with cruelty and dark heart. The police in Basse, are the worst of the Gambia police force.I remember a time when the market was distroyed and when reconstructed, Muna Njie an APRC woman councilor seized all stalls belonging to oppositions and gave it out to APRC supporters.There was a big riot and the police came to protect Muna Njie's compound because many people outside Basse do not know what transpires in Basse.............Some things are best left unsaid!
Gambians should do everything to remove Yahya Jammeh from power otherwise after him I fear for our SMILING COAST. |

Kobo, Can you see how dull you are? Can you coat me ever saying Jammeh should be removed by force? Accusing everyone everywhere as if you the best.I belief Jammeh is even better than you.Because you perambulate every where with little or no tangible or credible source to your allegations. How could you accuse someone you barely knew? |
