Man sentenced for slapping his wife

One Ebrima Drammeh was on Wednesday, 26th January 2011 convicted and sentenced by Magistrate Abeke of the Brikama Magistrates Court to a fine of D5, 000 in default to serve one year imprisonment for the offence of common assault contrary to Section 227 of the Criminal Code Cap 10, Vol 11, Laws of The Gambia.

The particulars of the offence revealed that the accused on the 13th day of January 2011, in Brikama Gidda, Kombo Central District of the West Coast Region, wilfully and unlawfully slapped one Mansata Drammeh (his wife) with his hand and thereby committed an offence. When the charge sheet was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty to the offence.
Prosecutor 3645 Trawally who stood for the IGP told to the court that it was not the first time the accused did such to his wife. He disclosed that the accused had committed the same offence on two previous occasions.

A positive judgement for zero tolerance towards domestic violence and the same should also apply to women who are violent to men.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |
