http://www.gainako.com/news/news/2011/01/17/political-bombshell-udp-youth-leader-ramba-jatta-defects-to-aprc-.html

In as much the story on Rambo's defection is of bad taste, the reportage over his defection is true. Gainako was able to get in touch with members of the UDP party who confirmed the story reported by Freedom. Admittedly, this is another hard blow to the limping opposition fraternity. The source we spoke with hinted that Rambo will be positioned in the Tourism industry by the APRC.

That said, it helps to add to Jammeh's plate as a way of justifying his habitual human rights abuses and iron-fist rule. I hope the latest bomb explosion at the opposition quarters serves as a lesson for all of them, that unity is the only way around. If they drag their feet in uniting, they will lose some of their folks to the APRC.

One truly wonders over this recent dramatic turn. Rambo out of all people has finally decided to mortgage his pride and integrity, and defect to the APRC leadership, a party that humiliated him to the brink of death.

Like the town crier would say upon delivering a message with bad taste, thus: “I am sorry for being the carrier of this message.”

Yero.

Good news. Now it is time for the voters to leave this political party that has no vision, no political intelligence, no ideology and no programs. It is only coincidence that they are main opposition party.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

I respect Rambo's decision and wish him good luck. It isn't a suprise news to us anyway.

In UDP, no one is indispensable.

I think this is a result of frustration with the whole opposition camp. The Gambian opposition has failed Gambians and there is no immediate hope for the future. Unless and until a new breed emerges the downward spiral will continue.

I am bold enough to predict that the total votes for the opposition will be less than the 2006 numbers. Unless a leader that can unite the people emerges, APRC will stay in power.

MOE once said Waa is a good Politician and I responded by calling Waa a turn coat but I am having second thoughts now. At this point smart politician should focus on working with the APRC Government in order to (if possible) change their policies and ensure better Governance.

Where is brother Karamba in this. Rambo has done what all intelligent opposition in the Gambia would do. If you cant beat them, join them. Brother Karamba, your big intelligent brain is needed in the development arena and please be free to use this honourable forum to announce your defection to the ruling elite of the republic of the Gambia. I salute Rambo for making such an intelligent choice. Good luck in your new family.

It is the mark of intelligence to entertain an idea without accepting it.

Hey guys, let's move on. Rambo's defection is only a sabotage that is already being taking care of. He has made his decision and we have to respect it. However, this leaves no vacuum in the UDP. We are moving on.

I hope the opposition are learning a good lesson. That if you want to win the hearth and minds of the people, you have to put your house in order first. But yes UDP still remains strong putting in to account Waa was even stronger than Ramboo.

NYARIKANBANNA. I DISAGREE! ACCEPT MY SYMPATHY AS THESE DEVELOPMENTS ARE BROKEN BACKBONE FOR UDP. RAMBO IS A HERO LIKE WAA; AS THEY WERE IN LINE OF FIRE AND FACED ALL SORTS OF HARDSHIPS IN THE STRUGGLE.

ITS EASY AND COMFY TO TAB KEYBOARDS/ON-LINE CHATS; ISSUING ALL KINDS OF FRIVOLOUS STATEMENTS, RANTING & RAMBLING; WITHOUT ANY EFFECT. ANY STRATEGY OR TACTIC THAT UNDERMINES A NATIONAL UNITED FRONT; "MERGER OF POLITICAL PARTIES" FOR OPPOSITION PARTIES & ALL OPPONENTS WILL NOT WORK AGAINST JAMMEH/APRC.

2006 UNDER NADD WAS A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR OPPOSITION & THOSE WHO MADE IT FAILED ARE FAILING, FALLING ONE BY ONE! JUST IMAGINE HARDSHIP OF FEMI PETER'S AND OTHERS! WHY SHOULD RAMBO WAIT FOREVER?

WE AWAITING UDP'S PRESS RELEASE ON HAMAT BAH & RAMBO

This is the beginning of the end for UDP. It is inevitable, once you became obsolete and there is no hope for success, people will give up on you. I expect domino effect and more people will leave the sinking ship.

I am surprise why some udp members did not join PDOIS, the party with more promise and vision...

I honestly think this defection should be treated with seriousness by all politically conscious people in the Gambia. Not because of Rambo's position in the UDP or what not, but what he may or may not stand for in his political ideology and mind set.

He said "If you cannot beat the system join them" This is a serious statement and it tells volume on how politically informed this guy is. So does he mean to tell us that he now needs to join the regime in torturing innocent people as he admitted was done to him, arrest innocent citizens without due process of the law, make citizens disappear without trace? Is this what this guy is wanting to join?

This is fundamentally what is wrong with African and Gambian politics. Most of them have no principles and are after their pockets and one minute fame.

What message would this send to young Gambians who aspire to become public servants? What message does this send to law abiding citizens who simply wants to exercise their civic rights? So it is ok to torture someone to near death and for those people to come back and embrace the very system that subject them to such inhumane treatment?

UDP or any other political party should take these kinds of defections seriously because this guy knows the inside and outside of the UDP. He is familiar with their policies and principles and how they plan to move forward to challenge the APRC or how they want to work with other opposition parties.

This is all the more reason why a political party should carefully have guided principles and assessments on who can fit well or not. If anybody can jump into a party and become a trusted individual what are the safeguards in preventing someone else being planted in a party only to come out and destroy that party?

We have gone through this before and it is how Waa Juwara obstructed every opportunity for Darboe to lead the NADD coalition in 2006. Political parties need to be able to trust its party leadership from the first man/woman to the last.

Quite frankly, I am disgusted that Rambo did this and this is the kind of politicians we saw during the Jawara regime. They don't deserve to serve the Gambian people because they are corrupt to the bones and have no sense of right and wrong.

I wish the UDP and the rest of the opposition well and Rambo will soon dance to his own music. It is shameful!

Turk you have answered your question in your prior postings. I think majority of Gambians are not educated enough to grasp the policies PDOIS is preaching, the party to me rigid and the first President did damaged the party by calling it Socialist Party and saying people were moving away from socialist ideas.

PDOIS as is not the answer. I fervently believe it will take a new breed of politicians to rescue Gambia.

LET RAMBO ENJOY JAMMEH'S MILLIONS LIKE GANYI, MAM MANYICK & WAA AMONGST OTHERS!

PFOIS IS NOT THE ANSWER BUT THEY ARE OFFERING CIVIC EDUCATION TO INFORM THE CITIZEN, PROPAGATING JUSTICE, DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLES, ACCOUNTABILITY, TRANSPARENCY & GOOD GOVERNANCE; OVER THE YEARS. FOR 2011 THEY HAVE DETAILED OUT AN AGENDA AS THE BASIS FOR SOUND STRATEGIC / TACTICAL RESOLUTIONS TO MOBILISE GENERAL PUBLIC OPINION IN RESOLVING OUR POLITICAL CRISES; WHICH UNFORTUNATELY AVERAGE GAMBIANS DON'T CARE ABOUT!

THE ANSWER FOR A SOLID FOUNDATION FOR ALL OPPONENTS IS ON THIS DECLARATION AS QUOTED FROM UDP LEADER'S NEW YEARS MESSAGE;

"We ask all our citizens to be an integral part of the change they seek by getting involved in whatever capacity suits them.Change is always a difficult task and along the way it is easy to become despondent, fearful, tired, angry, and sometimes be tempted to throw in the towel. But because the cause we have embarked upon is a just one that must be pursued, we must all strive harder to achieve these important goals. We however, can do it only if we come together as one and face the opponent. This cause is bigger than any individual or group of individuals." By Lawyer Darboe UDP Leader

THAT (ABOVE) IS MY POSITION, WHAT PDOIS ADVOCATES AND FORMATION OF NADD SINCE 2006!

YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE CERTAIN CONTEMPT, CONTRADICTIONS, DOUBLE STANDARDS & DIS-LOYALTY TO OUR NATIONAL CAUSE WITH OTHER OPPOSITION PARTIES; LEADERS & PARTY MILITANTS

Good inputs, dbaldeh. Lets hope that UDP gets over this soonest. However this is not only a UDP problem but a problem for democracy in our country where money and power stand firmer and higher that principles and conscience.
