Well that's a very strange route for an "opportunity" cynical ? me, of course not There are of course many Russians who have become rich from Oil and Gas,and other highly profitable products.
"Just a couple of weeks ago, we received a confirmation from Euro Airline confirming that the Russia airline will be allowed to do fit-freedom traffic between Switzerland and Banjul."
I did a search on the WWW couldn't find "Euro Airline" maybe more experiences internet users can find something about this company. This page I thought might help:
http://www.aneki.com/airlines/Russian_airlines.html
Nothing there then
http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/article/russian-airline-to-extend-operations-to-the-gambia
Russian airline to extend operations to The Gambia Africa » Gambia Friday, January 14, 2011 The director general of the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Nfansu Bojang has revealed that negotiations are ongoing to commence flight operations between The Gambia and Russia.
The GCAA boss made this revelation at the National Assembly while responding to concerns raised by some members of the National Assembly Select Committee on Public Accounts and Public Enterprises Agency on Tuesday. He said they have already negotiated with a Russian airline that is willing to operate a Moscow-Geneva-Banjul route. He explained that the negotiation was done following a visit by his authority's marketing team to the ITB, the leading tourism fair promotion of destination including the director of Air Transport and Commerce and some officials of the Gambia Tourism Authority (GTA) and the Gambia Hotel Association (GHA) with other stakeholders like the Ground Tour Operators.
"Just a couple of weeks ago, we received a confirmation from Euro Airline confirming that the Russia airline will be allowed to do fit-freedom traffic between Switzerland and Banjul. We have since then responded that we have given provisional approval pending the review of their formal application, which will come subsequently. So that is in progress and happily now there is an airline interested in operating between Switzerland and Russia and is also willing to extend operations to Banjul. They have already contacted us for provisional approval," Bojang said.
Runway bumpiness Responding further to a concern about the level of roughness on the runway, Bojang explained that this is due to ongoing works in the area. He said close to 2.4kilometers of the runway is now accessible to traffic adding that the point 6 kilometres is still closed-up because there are some other incomplete works relating to the bumpiness which the contractor needs to address before it is fully accessible for traffic.
Committee's concern At that juncture, the deputy speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Fatou Mbye who was presiding over the meeting made two observations. She said that while going through the report she noticed that GCAA overspent on training for over D1.181, 000,000 without providing any justification to the expenditure and asked for clarification as to what is responsible for the increase registered in the staff cost with a corresponding degree of operational and administrative costs. She asked if this was due to the decrease in the movement of staff or due to the fact that the authority had more and better, qualified staff, which needed them to pay that high salary.
Hon. Sulayman Joof, National Assembly member for Serrekunda West constituency expressed concern over the decline in tourist arrivals. He observed that the contribution of tourism to the GDP has dropped from 17% to 12%, which he attributed to a decline in tourism arrivals. Commenting on the prospects of attracting more tourists from Russia, Hon. Joof suggested that there be an air-link to this destination, which he opined would attract more tourists from Russia to The Gambia.
Hon. Sellu Bah, NAM for Basse challenged GCAA to intensify their marketing promotions to sell the Gambian airport in order to attract more travellers and airlines. He said the 20 Euros airport charge implemented by the GCAA was embarrassing for the fact that people were taken unawares. While conceding that it was not a bad initiative, he advised that people should at least be sensitised about it.
In his response to the concerns raised, DG Bojang said 11 of his staff undergoing overseas training are being trained in the areas of engineering. He explained that these are very expensive fields. On the integration of the Fire Services to GCAA pay roll, Bojang confirmed that this was done to acquaint them (the Fire Services) with the fire fighting skills of the aviation industry. Hi Toubab I belive the artical got a bit mixed up. They were talking about flights from russia - switzerland -gambia, the euro bit got mixed up. Euroairport swiss (bsl)Basel Switzerland/Mulhouse is the swiss airport in question. An Airline has not been named yet. With business as it is it has no chance of getting off the ground Tom |
