PRICES OF COOKING OIL, OTHERS RISE AGAIN CONSUMERS ARE STILL COMPLAINING
By Kebba Camara 10-01-11
This reporter continues to monitor the prices of basic food commodities in urban Gambia, two weeks after publishing in the Foroyaa an update of prices in the markets. The consumers are complaining about the sudden and regular increase of prices of food within a period of two weeks.
Speaking to this reporter, a retailer in the Serrekunda market, who prefers anonymity, said not quite long ago the price for a gallon of cooking oil was D850 but that now it is sold at D870. He said the retail price for a cup of cooking oil used to be D9.50 and that now it is D10. He said the price of for a bag of sugar stands at D1, 400 and the cup is D8. A bag of rice, according to him, is at D775 and D875, depending on the brand and that the cup sells at D4 and D6 respectively. He said the price of flour per bag is D870. Further explaining, the retailer disclosed that some of them have stopped selling onions and potatoes because of the fluctuating nature of the prices. He said he last bought onions when the price for a bag was D550. He noted that at the moment the price for a kilo of both onions and potatoes is D30. Making further enquiries, this reporter also caught up with the women who sell palm oil in the market. Two weeks ago when these same women were interviewed by this reporter they told him that the retail price for a cup of palm oil was D12. However, when asked this time round, the palm oil vendors explained that the price is now D13 due to the hike in the price of a gallon. They said the smaller cup which used to be D6 is now at D6.50. The women however added that the D5O dalasi profit which they get from a gallon can only be realised with such an increment. The women fish sellers/vendors also explained that the price of fish from the wholesalers is very expensive and that this is why they are now selling ‘Bonga’ fish (Kobo-Chalo), the cheapest in the market, for D5 each. To get their version on the price increases, some women told this reporter the difficulties they encounter daily when coming to the market with money that is insufficient to buy them basic food items which are getting expensive on a regular basis. The women explained that even coming with D100 fish money cannot fetch you the minimum of the basic food needs for a good meal. They lamented the difficulties and suffering being experienced on a daily basis in order to provide food for lunch for their families. The traders also for their part explained that they would not be able to continue doing business if they increase the prices in accordance with wholesale prices which they got the commodities for. This reporter will continue to monitor the situation regarding the prices of basic food items in the markets and report any development regarding the increase or lowering of prices of such food items. He will also obtain the views of wholesalers/importers and the Ministry of Trade on the issue of food prices. Source: Foroyaa
