I wish happy, healthy and successful 2011 for every bantaba member!

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

Still got a headache from celebrating last night in Seneganbia, felt like half of Gambia was there lookig forward to 2011.
But still a few thoughts
The same pressures that effect people in the UK and Europe affect Gambians.
When the USA and UK want to go to war with Iraq and Afghanistan the effect on stock markets around the world is devastating. The effect on peaceful little Gambia is difficult for the Government to handle. World commodity price (in our case Rice, Sugar, Fuel etc) increases leave Gambians with a big problem. We don’t have reserves to call on we just have to try to manage our way out of the difficulties. .
Gambia also has many refugees from Africa’s war torn countries,( and more coming by the day) we don’t say no to people in need, despite our own difficulties.
Over the past few years we have made some progress in building the country, our inflation rate was one of the lowest in Africa, but recent events on the world scene have put back all our hard work, but we are “still trying”
We are also at the mercy of the weather (the very weather I came here for) when the rains are late or fail our people face difficulty. This year we have had problems with too much rain and floods devastated many people. 80% of Gambians depend on agriculture.
Things are better on the infrastructure front; new roads allow things to be moved quicker, saving time and money. Its a shame things in offices don’t move at the same pace.
Europeans living here spending money benefits far more people here than it would back in the Europe because of the extended family system everyone in the family benefits.
Even on modest means, Europeans are very rich in Gambian terms, but you cannot help everyone who needs it, so you have to consider the best way to make maximum impact. Encouraging tourists to adopt a person or family on a long term basis will take a lot of people out of poverty. Unfortunately tourism is down, there are fewer flights than last year, also Monarch are using smaller aircraft, and still not all flights are full
To take people out of poverty costs a European very little, but has a dramatic local effect.
What Gambia needs is investment, many people come to check the possibilities, but unfortunately not a lot comes to fruition. Too much red tape and frustration. Also too much (what’s good for the boys)
Europe has some delightful people who support the Gambia in Education, Health and poverty alleviation. NGO’s and charities do a fantastic service to the people of Gambia in the time and help they give. Gambians are most grateful and try to show it as best they can, the smile says it all.
We look forward to 2011 to try and improve everyones standards as best we can.
