UK Ambassador pays tribute to 1st Battalion of the Gambian regiment

The Point: Published on Friday, June 12, 2015

UK Ambassador to The Gambia Colin Crorkin today, will today, 12 June, pay tribute to the gallant members of the 1st Battalion of The Gambian Regiment on the anniversary of the end of the battle of Mowdok, 12th June 1944.
For over a month during the Second World War, the Gambian regiment fought alongside the Allies and displayed distinguished valour and devotion to duty during the battle of Mowdok, located on the border between Bangladesh and Myanmar.

This singular dedication to duty played an important role that should always be honoured.

Their efforts contributed immensely in ending the Second World War and paving the way for a new generation of Gambia Armed Force members that also continue to gain recognition for their commendable efforts in peacekeeping missions.

Ambassador Crorkin said: The exemplary display of valour by the 1st Battalion, The Gambian Regiment will continue to remain etched in our memories as we commemorate the 70th year since the end of the battle of Mowdok and the end of the Second World War.
