Tourism Board of Directors Dissolved – Chairman

By Kebba Ansu Manneh On Jun 11, 2020

The board of directors of the Gambia Tourism Board has been dissolved, according to the board Chairman.

Abdoulie Baks Touray confirmed to The Chronicle Thursday and stated there were no reasons advanced for the dissolution.

He said he has received a dissolution letter on Wednesday, 10th June, 2020.

“Yes, the board has been dissolved. I can’t give you any reason for now. I believe it is the pleasure of the President to dissolve the board.,” he tells The Chronicle.

“They (government) appoint you at their pleasure and dissolve it at their pleasure, and all that I can tell you is that they have dissolved the board,” Touray said.

The members of the board directors that has been dissolved include

Abdoulie Baks Touray as Chairman, Malleh Sallah, Kathrine Nyang and Babucarr Suwareh who all received their letters of dissolution, The Chronicle understands.

Malleh Sallah has also confirmed the dissolution of the board of directors, disclosing that no reasons have been advanced to explain the decision.

The Chronicle understands that the decision was made following the growing misunderstanding between the staff and the management of the authority on a proposed six months holiday with half salaries offered to the staff.

A source revealed to this medium that six staffers of the authority had also wrote a petition to the board of directors demanding an explanation on why the tourism and culture Minister Hamat Bah is receiving allowances from both the Ministry and GT Board, why 120 litres fuel coupon is given to the minister from the Board, and his medical travel allowances accorded to his family.

Both the director general of Gambia Tourism Board Abdoulie Hydara and Minister Hamat Bah were contacted for reaction but could not be reached for comments.

A scoop for the Chronical newspaper, well done,I have not been able to find another media outlet who had picked up this story,I think we will here more about this topic now that it is in the public domain.
Members of the board before they were desolved should be able to be heard and answer what reasons the government had to make the course of action that it did.

The Ministry of Tourism and Culture has dissolved the board of directors of the Gambia Tourism Board.

Tourism Minister Hamat Bah confirmed the development yesterday but said he will not make any further comments as to the reasons for their removal.
He also confirmed the redeployment of the director general Abdoulie Hydara to the foreign service and his replacement by the GTB director of quality assurance and licensing, Abubacarr Camara.

The dissolution comes amid a standoff between the ministry and its technical body after the minister ordered the entire staff of the board to go on leave with half salary after the collapse of the industry resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.
The chairman of the board of directors, Abdoulie Touray, confirmed the dissolution of the board but said no explanations were given.

“The letter we received does not state any reasons, but remember we were appointed at the pleasure of the authorities and if they dissolved, it is their prerogative,” he told The Standard last evening.

He said prior to their dissolution they had engaged in discussions to proffer solutions to the crisis with first meeting taking place last Thursday.
Touray said the second meeting billed for yesterday could not proceed after the announcement of the dissolution of the board.

The board which includes Malleh Sallah, Babucarr Suwareh and Catherine Nyang was nominated by the president in consultation with the Tourism ministry. It was inaugurated last January for a three-year term.

At the inauguration of the dissolved board last year, Tourism Minister Hamat Bah stated that the ministry has chosen the right people in the tourism industry to drive the new tourism policy in advancing the sector.
