Pierre Sylva, the spokesperson of the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) has urged the general public to desist from gathering near electrical transformers, saying it could be disastrous if any of the transformers catches fire.
“People should desist from packing their goods and properties under such transformer. This could be harmful anytime it catches fire,” he cautioned.
Mr. Sylva was speaking to The Point recently in an interview at Gunjur, after the national electricity giant successfully repaired its transformer that was burnt down last month at the Gunjur Beach, destroying shops and other individual properties.
“We have been sensitising people frequently on the dangers associated with regard to gathering under such transformers. Therefore, people should be mindful of their lives and properties and desist from sitting under such devices,” he emphasised.
Abdoulie Nyang, whose shop and money was burnt during the inferno, welcomed the move taken by NAWEC to repair the burnt transformer. “Since the incident happened, the communities of the area were encountering difficulties to have electricity,” he said, while urging NAWEC to compensate them as they lost almost their entire goods during the incident.
He said: “Now we can enjoy electricity after weeks of blackout since the incident occurred. What we are asking NAWEC to do is to fulfill the compensation they promised us.”
Lamin Pakuto Jammeh, a revenue collector at Gunjur Fisheries Ice Plant, expressed his satisfaction towards the swift response from NAWEC. “We stopped producing ice blocks since the transformer got burnt last month, which has affected us greatly. The ice blocks that we make are the ones that are mostly used by the fish vendors at the beach.”
The incident, he went on, has made them lose huge amount of money within the period. “We entirely stopped work at the beach when the transformer was burnt because we entirely depend on electricity for our daily work.”
