The High Court of the Gambia presided over by Justice Amina Saho-Ceesay yesterday ordered the release of Ossama Cheeytani and Mahdi Tageedin, business tycoons upon them entering into recognizance in the sum of D2.5 million each with one Gambian surety in the like sum.

The High Court Judge also directed that the surety must deposit the document of title to a property in the Greater Banjul Area valued at not less than D5 million with the Registrar of the said court.

The presiding Judge further ordered that the applicants; Ossana Cheeytani and Mahdi Tageedin deposit their passports with the Registrar of the court as condition for their appearance before any court in the event any charges are filed or likely to be heard.

Justice Amina Saho-Ceesay also ordered that upon fulfillment of the said conditions, they be admitted to bail pending the hearing and determination of any charge.

The presiding Judge also directed for expedited hearing of any matters involving the applicants.

Justice A.S. Ceesay’s order came and was premised on a motion for bail dated and filed on the 30th July, 2019 containing a 23-paragraph affidavit sworn by one Rajaa Skaf Tajeddine.

The affidavit in support of the motion for bail amongst other things disclosed that the applicants are business tycoons who recently imported containers of sugar and whilst the containers were being offloaded, some quantity of cocaine was found therein.

The affidavit in support of the motion also disclosed that the applicants were the very persons that reported the discovery of the said cocaine to the authority but were unfortunately arrested and detained.

Meanwhile, presiding judge A.S Ceesay in her order asserted that the court has reasonable grounds to make an order for the release of the applicants as the State/Respondent were not opposed to granting bail.

Meanwhile, judges in the superior courts of the Gambia would commence the summer vacation today, 1st August, 2019.

The Standard has been reliably informed that Justice Ebrima Jaiteh would serve as the vacation judge from the 1st August to the 23rd August 2019 but the summer vacation is expected to end on the 30th September, 2019 and the new legal year would begin on the 1st October, 2019.

The Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia DLEAG has announced that its operatives have discovered 48 blocks of suspected cocaine in 20 bags in a container in Banjul recently.

The said cocaine is believed to be from Brazil and was allegedly shipped into the country by Mahdi Tajudinn and Ossama Mahmoud, a Gambian and a Lebanese respectively who were arrested and are helping narcotic officers in their investigations.

The DLEAG said the drug was allegedly addressed to Laura Food Company which deals in various types of
foodstuff since 2016.

The deputy spokesperson of DLEAG, Yassin A. Ndimballan told jounalsuts Thursday that the container was part of a consignment of 30x20ft containers of white crystal sugar ordered from Toyota Tsusho Sugar Trading Ltd based in the UK.

While offloading the sugar at a shop at Picton Street in Banjul, she
went on, the laborers discovered two loose bags containing 20 blocks and 6 blocks of what was suspected to be cocaine.

“The laborers then informed the buyer (Sid Ahmed) who also called the attention of the supplier (Mahdi Tajudinn, the Sales Manager of LFC). Mahdi then instructed Ahmed Ali, an employee of LFC to go and verify what was discovered and upon providing feedback, Mahdi came to the scene to see for himself,” Ndimballang said.

She further said having been shown the blocks, Mahdi instructed for the container to be escorted to their warehouse on Bond Road and and also informed his uncle, one Muhamed Nasser proprietor of Kairaba Shopping Center.

“Mr. Nasser then contacted one Muhamed Zeid (DAA) who advised them to contact DLEAG,” the NDLEAG spokesperson said.

She added that on arrival the operatives were shown the two bags containing 26
blocks of cocaine.

“A further search resulted in the discovery of two more bags containing 10 and 12 blocks of cocaine
respectively.

In total four bags
concealing cocaine were discovered containing (6), (20), (12), (10)
blocks making a total quantity of (48) blocks,” she revealed.

The NDEAG officer said her office is aware and will continue to work hard in the fight against drug traffickers who are beating even advanced technology in advanced countries.

Ousman Ceesay, deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Interior has reaffirmed government’s continued commitment to fight organised crimes and drug related activities in the country, which compelled the government to ratify all the conventions related to drugs.

Speaking at the opening of a three-day ECOWAS-JAIDTOC capacity building workshop and drug sensitisation for journalists and representatives from various youth groups at the National Nutrition Agency (NaNA), on Monday, Mr. Ceesay emphasised the importance of the gathering, particularly at this stage of rigorous fight against drug.

“The Drug Law Enforcement Agency The Gambia (DLEAG) is using several strategies to ensure that people are well sensitised on the negative effects of drugs. This is manifested in the various community sensitisations and radio talk shows that the Agency is doing.”

Daniel Amankwaah, principal programme officer representing Ecowas resident representative in The Gambia said the severe impacts that illicit drugs have on health, development, peace and security and on every aspect of life, has been destructive. “It is important to remind ourselves that illicit drug trafficking, drug abuse and related organised crimes are obstacles to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals. The drug menace has the ability to even erode the gains that have already been made by years of strenuous efforts.”

He said given its pervasive nature, it has been recognised that the drug menace cannot be successfully controlled without enlisting the support of civil society organisations, especially journalists and the youth at all levels.

Mr. Amankwaah said the programme is crucial in addressing the drug menace not only in The Gambia, but also in West Africa as a whole. “It imperative that drug abuse, illicit drug trafficking and related crimes are addressed at all levels.”

Spokesperson of DLEAG, Ousman Saidybah underscored the significance of the forum, saying that his Agency is committed to addressing drug related activities in the country, as it has been engaging the media and various youth groups in sensitisations that target to combat the menace in the country.
