More Problems for the Gambia TAX BASED ECONOMY,is it the right basis ?
bearing in mind the lack of employment opportunities and the resulting hardship of THE AVERAGE GAMBIAN.

The NGO community complained over the gross taxation of their income and saw it as an unfair way of treating the community. Many of them who were visited by the Select committee over week said it’s a major challenge and government should reconsider revising it.
So far all the NGOs visited over the week by the Select committee on Environment, NGO Affairs and Sustainable Development Goals cry over the high taxation imposed on them by government as major challenges.
The Select Committee kicked off a 6 day trek visiting a selected number of NGOs across the country as a way of carrying their oversight functions. Every NGO visited the issue of gross taxation of staff was a challenge for the NGOs.
ActionAid International’s Director Omar Badgie said our gross income is taxed, from house rent to our transport allowances by 35%, this is on the high side and is affecting staff and the organization as a whole.
Government he said needs to revise this decision as none of our staff are foreign and no international experts among us, we are all Gambians working for the development of the Gambia.
“Gross taxation is affecting Wuli and Sandu Development Association (WASDA) an NGO established some years ago” Fajanko Ceesay Finance Director. This high tax is a major challenge he said.
The Executive director of ADWAC, Mam Samba Joof said our income is grossly taxed by 35% or more, it’s unfair, and very much on the high side. This is not helping the NGO community and “I see it as segregation as others are not taxed grossly”. Director Samba told the law makers that that treatment is segregating, the law should apply on all but in this case it’s only the NGOs who suffer.
At TOSTAN in Basse the head of the NGO also complain of the gross taxation of their income by 25%. This he said this is not going down well with them and it seems it is only them in the NGO whose gross incomes are taxed this high.
The law makers will continue their tour today by visiting YMCA and CRS before concluding the exercise.

National Assembly’s select committee on Environment, NGOs Affairs and Sustainable Development Goal visited ActionAid International the Gambia (AAITG) yesterday at its headquarters in Kanifing as part of their over sight functions.
The committee is task to look into the activities, constraints and challenges of what NGOs are facing in implementing their programs in the Gambia.
Giving a background history of the organization Director Badgie , said Action Aid was established in 1979, registered as local NGO with a Board and a management team for operations.
AAITG is an affiliate member of AAI Currently implementing 5th strategy paper ( CSPV 2018-2023-BuildingResilience for Social Justice- BReS ) in 3 Local Rights Program (LRPs): CRR & NBR with a national dimension.
AAITG works with and through people living in poverty (PLIP) and their institutions especially women, children and youth. Their work is mainly financed through individual regular giving and partnership funding.
According to the country Director Omar Badgie, they have three Programme Ambitions as follows: PA 1: Build a society with empowered women, youth and children that is free of violence and injustice PA 2: Achieve quality, gender-responsive public services, transparent and accountable public resource mobilization and management by government PA 3: Secure resilience of communities to Climate Change and attain food Security, Climate Justice and comprehensive disaster prevention through the agency of people living in poverty.
He added that their Key interventions areas are in Agriculture, Sustainable Development, Environment and resilience programs this he said include strengthening livelihoods among other things.
Director Badgie told the law makers that restoring the environment is key on their agenda and his organization will be raising up to 10,000 indigenous tree species for planting.
He further stated that they do also focus on Resilient building programmes for most vulnerable peoples especially women and youth, Production inputs and implement supports to enhance food and nutrition security, Land campaigns- ownership and control for smallholder farmers especially for women, as long as Promoting Agro-ecology and eco-restoration practices.
However the director lamented that their key challenges are increase in the frequency of disasters, Climate change impact which includes environmental degradation; deforestation worsened by timber sale, Floods, Strong windstorms and droughts.
Meanwhile he also dilated on their key achievements which are; capacity building programs targeting smallholder farmers on proper management and care for livestock, local chicken feed preparation among others.
