The Select committee on Local Government and Regional Integration of the National Assembly concludes a week long over sight function Monday 15th October 2018. The tour took them to all the regional administrations across the country.
The Chairman of the select committee Hon Musa Amul Nyassi , said the tour is one of their key functions as law makers.
Hon Nyassi reiterated that the visit aims at assessing the activities of the Councils, identify the constrains and help mitigate them. He stressed that the government should be put to task in performing its duties to the Councils and the citizenry
At the Kaur Market the Committee engaged Kuntaur Area Council Chief Executive Pa Ansu Daboe on the status of the market under construction. The CEO told the law makers that as a council it is their mandate to provide services to the people as stipulated in the Local Government Act. And it was in line with that his council paid D800,000 to GAMWORS as their counterpart payment under Poverty Alleviation and Capacity Building project (PACAB) for the construction of the said market.
The occupants of the market stalls pay a monthly fee of D500 to council as rental. This he said is one of the council’s sources of income.
CEO Darboe explain to the Law makers that council have three sub committees, Finance, Development and Establishment, each responsible for the effective execution of its prescribed mandates.
He also said that the total revenue base for Kuntaur Area Council (KAC) is in the tune of D6 million, of which D3 million goes to the payment of salaries. This he said is in sufficient and cannot finance all the needed activities of the Council.
At the council’s main office in Kuntaur, CEO Darboe told the members of the select committee some of the ongoing developments. He cited the construction of office building and staff quarters, the Construction of a multipurpose center at Kaur, the construction of five bore holes with 11 hand pumps are some of the major successes of the Kuntaur Area Council.
“Our basket at GAMWORS for Kuntaur Area Council is about 48 million dalasi, our counterpart contribution is D3.5 million and as at now we have paid D2.4m” of the D3.5m, he said.
CEO Darboe, decried the lack of government subvention, mobility and capacity as key challenges which is impacting no their work.
Mustapha Njie and Musa Bah, some of the occupants of the Kaur market commends the Council for their tireless efforts in improvising services to them and called for continuity.
David Gomez of the Ministry of Regional Government told the officials of the Council, that their Challenges are noted and assured that the concerns raised will be looked into.
Hon. Foday N.M Drammeh a member of the committee, explained to the officials that the exercise is mandatory on the Committee to probe into the activities of the Agencies under its domain so as to improve delivery.
Earlier, the Committee visited Farafenni Meat and Fish Market, where the vendors decried the lack of storage facilities, poor conditions and location of the market inter alia as Challenges affecting their work and called for remedies

A serious inferno has engulfed an office complex of the chairman of Kuntaur Area Council (KAC) in Medina Wassu, Central River Region (CRR) North, consuming office items and important documents last week.

The cause of the fire was said to have emanated from an electric spark. Meanwhile, the Council chairman’s office has been moved to Medina Wassu, while its main office in Kuntaur is under reconstruction.

Chairman Saikou Jawara said several important materials, including the Council’s official documents were burnt in the fire.

Niani District chief Alhagie Pierre Bah also expressed shock over the incident, describing the situation as ‘unfortunate’.

Councilors also expressed worried about the incident because it may affect their work as important records have been burnt.
