Mr. President, how are you this Monday morning? Hope you are getting along very well. We wish you a very pleasant week ahead.

Mr. President, we still want to remind you of the problems of land disputes in the country and the need for urgent solutions to end this phenomenon which still remains a challenge to your government.

So far five lives have been lost on the issue of communal disputes which is posing a big threat to the security of the country.

Last year, four lives were lost in Faraba as a result of sand mining issues between the community of Faraba Banta and Julakay who claimed to have a licence to conduct mining activities in that community; and one life has also been lost in the recent Gunjur-Berending clashes.

There are rumours of more land issues to emerge if measures are not taken, which the authorities should waste no time intervening before it’s too late.

Mr. President, another health hazardous issue is the Bakoteh Dumping Site, which is becoming a big concern for residents staying around that end.

Your government should not waste time in finding a lasting solution to relocate the dumping site as it is causing a serious health threat for the residents, the children at the SOS Children’s Village, the SOS clinic and school.

When moved, even the space can be used for government’s development projects than leaving the land to waste and also posing a threat to people’s lives as the dumping site has started disturbing residents outside the Bakoteh area.

Mr. President, after your cabinet reshuffle last week, about two positions are still vacant which need to be filled.

Our advice is for you to fill in those positions with qualified and experienced Gambians based on merit and not politics.

Finally Mr. President, the security of the country shouldn’t be compromised and it seems like the local rifles are now being used for wrong purposes instead of their rightful purposes.

We are calling on your government and authorities involved to work in getting all local rifles licenced and those communities who are not into hunting; some parts of the Kombos and greater Banjul area residents must not possess them.

Good day!

THE Barrow administration has to turn the screw on KMC and increase the "action" that is being taken, the cause of the fire is PROBABLY Methane gas that has been ignited by a spark or small flame from hot dumped rubbish.

Fire outbreak at the Bakoteh dumpsite last week, scared some of the neighbors close to the perimeter fence of the landfill.

The fire which started on Saturday 16th June 2019 in the afternoon, scared the neighbors especially when it blazed towards some of the compounds. With the intervention of workers at the dumpsite, the youth and members of the fire and rescue services were able to control the situation from getting out of control.

Almamy Kanteh a neighbor whose compound is close to the dumpsite, told this reporter that they wanted to use the medium to put forward the concern of the people of Manjai Sanchaba, especially those close to the perimeter fence of the dumpsite. Kanteh said the fire started around 2.30 pm in the afternoon, and was aggravated by the presence of the wind; that this almost claimed the Manneh Kunda compound which is close to the dumpsite. He said the fire was put off due to the timely intervention of the youths and the fire service.

Fatou Sonko said they were worried when they saw the fire blazing towards their house.

She said they were about to watch the famous Senegalese Movie “Wiri Wiri “when they saw the fire coming towards them. She said they shouted for help and started removing materials from the compound so that the fire would not consume their properties.

Muhammed Sanyang, a staff at the dumpsite confirmed the fire incident but said they do not know the cause. He said it was serious, but due to the intervention of the Fire and Rescue services they were able to put off the fire. The council could not be reached for comment.

It could be recalled that the Kanifing Municipal Council together with Banjul City and the Brikama Area Council have established an inter-municipal committee to work on the eventual closure of Bakoteh dumpsite and put joint strategy for waste management.

The Mayor said in the last press conference he held that KMC faces the challenge of dealing with the numerous illegal dumpsites within the municipality.

Paramilitary officers from the Gambia Police Force have been deployed and stationed at Niamina Sambang rice-fields in the Central River Region to keep peace between the people of Niamina Sambang Mandinka Kunda and Niamina Sambang Fulakunda.

The PIU intervention came after reported clashes between the two communities left scores of people injured as they fight over the ownership of the rice field.

The genesis of the crisis arose from a judgment by the group tribunal or (district tribunal) delivered on the 18th March, 2018 in favour of Sambang Mandinka Kunda.

According to credible witnesses after the judgment in favour of Mandingka Kunda was made, Chief Pierre Bah of Niani, one of the Group Tribunal members allegedly wrote to the parties saying that he has corrected the judgment earlier given and had now reversed it in favour of Sambang Fula Kunda and accordingly issued a writ of possession to Sambang Fula kunda which was executed by the Sheriff of the High Court.

However, as the rainy season has started, the
people of both communities are relying on the different judgments to lay claims to the rice field leading to a standoff.

Meanwhile people of Sambang Mandinka- Kunda have filed an ex-parte motion before the High Court seeking an interim injunction restraining the people of Fula Kunda from interfering with the land pending the hearing and determination of the substantive application and to quash the judgment issued by the district tribunal.

During a High Court sitting over the matter yesterday, 21st August, 2019, the presiding judge, Justice Ebrima Jaiteh ruled and ordered an interim injunction restraining the people of both Sambang Mandinka Kunda and Sambang Fula Kunda, their agents or servants from interfering with the said land pending the hearing and determination of the substantive application.

The matter was adjourned to the 26th August, for hearing.
