Central River Region’s Nianija district chief has convicted and sentenced one Alieu Bah to a fine of D10, 000 after the district tribunal found him guilty of unlawfully cutting down a two timber trees.
Dawda York ruled that Mr. Bah will serve a jail term of 3 years with hard labour, should he fail to pay the sentence fine.
Mr. Bah was charged for cutting down two pieces of timber without a permit at Wellingara Buba forest with a chainsaw machine.
His undocumented machine was also seized by the court and forfeited to the government in accordance with the Forest Act 104.
Shortly after handing down the sentence on Mr. Bah, Chief York warned the people of his area to be responsible in keeping the forest cover safe, saying he will not compromise with anyone involved in practicing the illegal activity.
He further advice timber dealers to immediately cease from destroying the forest, saying anyone found wanting will be dealt with without any fear or favor. Author: Ousman Jallow, CRR
