A mob on Tuesday demolished over 23 compounds in Daru Busumbala, causing pandemonium and confusion in the community. The operation was witnessed by PIU officers, who were said to be following a court order. According to the affected residents, the demolition was carried out by the family of one Sulayman K Jobe in Serekunda who have been at loggerheads with the people of Busumbala over the land. The shocked residents who spoke to The Standard said they had no idea about the demolitions since they were not served any court eviction orders.
Amadou Ceesay, a resident of the community who was familiar with the matter in court, claimed that no judgment has been passed yet as the case was due to be concluded on October 16 and wondered how and why the Jobe Family would go ahead to demolish the compounds. “This action is unlawful and illegal and we hope the authorities will do something about of it,” Ceesay said. He added that they were informed by the lands and survey office that the department is unaware of these demolitions since the Brikama court is yet to deliver a judgment.
The Standard contacted a member of the Jobe family for comments who confirmed they are engaged in an on-going land case in the area but declined to make any further comments. The Standard also contacted ASP Lamin Njie, the police spokesperson who confirmed the exercise but was quick to add that the involvement of the police in any demolition exercise usually emanates from high court through the Sheriff’s office.
