Halifa Sallah reminds political Parties of what they carved together

The Point: Thursday, September 27, 2018

One of Gambia’s firebrand politician and secretary general of the Socialist PDOIS party has reminded leaders of the inter-party committee to remember what they have carved together that led to freeing the country from a tyranny.

Speaking at a media briefing at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) office on the outcome of the Inter Party Committee (IPC) community sensitization held recently, Halifa Sallah said their target was to create a level ground for multi-party contest that delivers fair, genuine and indisputable electoral outcomes.

Mr. Sallah, who is also the National Assembly Member of Serrekunda reminded the inter-party members about the commitment they’ve took to save the country from conflict and set it on the path to peaceful co-existence, national reconciliation and participatory democracy.

The principle and ethical political conduct inherent in the memorandum of understanding all the parties signed, he said, is premised on the letter and spirit of The Gambian constitution and the statues governing the political and electoral system.

Mr. Sallah said resolutions were passed to prepare sensitization guidelines and a decision was made to transform the 18-member inter-party committee at the national level into a monitoring team.

The Serrekunda NAM added that each sensitization team was charged with the responsibility of holding five sensitization sessions, covering 30 participants and 27 participants in each programme selected by the 9 political parties with a representation of three party activists per party. “There were also three non-party activists’ party participants who were supposed to be influential members of the community without party affiliation.”

He maintained that all the inter-party members had appended their signatures on the memorandum and gave their commitment to creating a peaceful and stable political environment underpinned by a transparent, plural and democratic political dispensation.

The parties, he said, promised to recognize the legitimacy of any elected government and its rights to govern within the constitution and the rights of the political opposition to operate freely and hold the government into account.
