Gambia stable, but security challenges remain
T&he Point: Tuesday, November 28, 2017
The director general of the State Intelligence Services has said that despite general calm and relative quietness as visible signs of stability throughout the Gambia, security challenges still remain for the country.
Ousman Sowe told reporters recently that for the country to preserve this peace and stability, it is important that the population is not driven by impulse or emotions in dealing with matters since the nation is still under a recovery mode.
“The challenges are there and we are adapting to them. The challenges of stabilization are structural issues that require patience, hard work and service delivery,” he said.
“It must be clear that the country is not under threat, domestic or foreign. However, this does not mean that we don’t have security challenges. We remain vigilant and we are busy applying a fool-proof security belt around the country,” he said.
The head of the intelligence agency said these at his second meeting with the press event, which marked the completion of a countrywide consultation tour. The tour was meant to spread the message of reconciliation, collaboration, consultation and coordination.
It was also an opportunity to assess the security situation, strengthen cooperation with sister security forces and reinforce the public image of the new agency in its new information gathering and analysing job.
Cooperation with other forces
“I don’t think the relation between the different forces have been this good – ever. The level of cooperation and collaboration is excellent,” he said, adding that the situation is the same with those of Senegal.
When his delegation arrived in Lower River Region, DG Sowe said he received a call from their Senegalese counterpart about some armed robbers caught around Tambacounda. A team was immediately dispatched there to help identify if these were the ones involved in robberies in The Gambia.
In Jangjangbureh too, he got information about another suspect fleeing from Senegalese security forces from the Southern Senegal towards Dakar and caught in transit at around Soma. Again, they immediately alerted their colleagues in Dakar and handed the suspect over to them, he explained.
Sowe said that information sharing is key to intelligence work and security service delivery, and the population can play a crucial role in this. “We received valuable contributions from the communities and we assured them of our accountability to them as tax payers,” he said. "Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.
