A four-day workshop on intellectual property crimes, trademark infringement and counterfeiting is underway at the Police Headquarters in Banjul.

The workshop, which runs from 10 to 13 April on industrial and intellectual property crime, was organised by the Gambia Police Force for their New Intellectual Property Crimes Unit.

The deputy Inspector General of Police, Momodou Sowe, said the emergent of new and varying types of crimes and the high rate at which they are committed is growing at an alarming rate, which prompted them to come up with such training.

“Combating this type of illicit activity falls within one of the cardinal responsibilities of the Gambia Police Force,” he said.

He urged the participants to be very focused throughout the sessions as it would enable them to enhance their knowledge and skills in the job.

He expressed his profound gratitude to facilitators of the training for sharing their knowledge, skills and precious time to be with them.

The head of the legal Affairs Unit, Momodou D. Mballow, thanked the police authorities for giving them the go ahead to come up with such initiatives that would boast their capacities and better equip them for their job.

Hassan Baldeh, one of the participants, said the workshop would improve their capacity and expertise in investigative skills, especially with crimes related to intellectual property.
