NRP wins Lower Saloum by-election landslide
The Point: Published on Friday, August 07, 2015
The opposition National Reconciliation Party (NRP) has won by a landslide the Lower Saloum by-election conducted yesterday in that constituency.
Whilst the ruling APRC party’s candidate Kaba Touray scored 1618 votes, the NRP candidate Modou Bamba Gaye polled 2764 votes, defeating his opponent by 1146 votes.
According to report aired by State TV, the total votes cast in the by-election was 4,382, adding that there were no invalid votes.
Speaking to this paper shortly after the results were announced, Hamat Bah, leader of NRP, said: “The results are clearly indicative of the people’s desire for a change in the 2016 election.”
He added: “Government deployed entire state machinery on the ground, but at the end of the day the people lost confidence in the APRC leadership.”
With this latest victory, the NRP has now got two seats at the National Assembly, which has a total of 48 elected MPs. Four are independent MPs and the ruling APRC party has 42 seats.
The by-election followed the sacking of Pa Malick Ceesay - who was the MP for Lower Saloum constituency - from the APRC party.
Ceesay is presently going to court, charged with economic crimes.

THE VOTERS OF LOWER SALOUM HAVE DECIDED
Foroyaa Editorial: Published on August 7, 2015
Foroyaa has been repeating that no President in the 21st Century should yearn to be a President for life because of the impossibility of achieving such aim. What is wise for every President to do is to prepare for life after the Presidency. This is what is realistic in the 21st Century.
One year before an election year the voters of Lower Saloum have sent a warning signal to the ruling party that it does not have monopoly of political power.
During the 2013 Mayoral election in Banjul, the voter turn -out was 46 percent and the seat was lost to an Independent Candidate. In the KMC Mayoral election the voter turn – out was 20 percent. The signs were becoming clear that the voters were beginning to have a mind of their own.
Lower Saloum has a total of 7712 voters. APRC gave the impression that it was an organised party and tried to change the elections rules which was followed by a by election in Lower Saloum. The end result is clear. The NRP Candidate had 2764 votes while the APRC Candidate had 1618 votes. 6094 did not vote for the APRC. This signals the need to engage in electoral reform to at least introduce the virtue of defeat with honour.
To fail to do so is to entertain the possibility of dishonourable defeat in the next electoral cycle commencing 2016.

We would start working on 2016 election from now: Mayor Colley
By: Njie Baldeh
The Point: Published on Monday, August 10, 2015
Mayor Yankuba Colley of the Kanifing Municipal Council, who also doubles as the national mobilizer for the ruling APRC party, has said they would henceforth start working on the 2016 general election from now, after losing the Lower Saloum National Assembly seat.
The KMC mayor was speaking during an interview with GRTS, following the outcome of the by-election in Lower Saloum constituency, which was won by the opposition National Reconciliation Party (NRP) candidate, Modou Bamba Gaye.
He told GRTS during the interview that “everybody knows that the APRC is a genuine party”, and they would do everything possible to correct the mistake to ensure it does not happen next time.
Mayor Colley added that many of them were on the ground to campaign, but at the end of the day the result was “disappointing”.
This was not what they expected from the people of Lower Saloum, he said.
Omar Khan, Governor of Central River Region, also expressed his disappointment with the people of Lower Saloum, saying that the outcome would help them to start working on the ground.
Modou Bamba Gaye, who won the Lower Saloum seat, thanked the people of Lower Saloum, saying he would represent them well at the National Assembly.
As representative of his people, he would write proposals to other organizations to seek funding to develop his area, he added.
Mustapha Carayol, chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, said the total votes cast in the by-election was 4,382, adding that there were no invalid votes.
He also said the majority of the voters were women and only five percent were men, something he said the IEC would investigate. |
