CORDEG should be formulated and constituted as a Civil Society Organization. That is the most effective role it can play to engender and help the change agenda in the Gambia.

To develop a structure that is representative and encompasses the totality of the Diaspora Gambian struggle, it should have as its core constituents most of the diaspora political groups, human and civil rights groups, the online media fraternity and other interest groups.

And in my humble opinion this is how I think it should be organizationally structured:

1. First, identify all the groups that are in the diaspora struggle, the political groups, the human and civil rights groups and other groupings.

b. Create standards and acceptable group structures for all the groups that will form the core constituents for CORDEG.

For example: to be registered as a core constituent for CORDEG, a political group, human and civil rights group or other groups must submit an organizational structure naming an executive, a constitution or bye-laws, and the number of people who are members of the group.

A minimum membership requirement for any group can be stipulated to prevent people who just form one-man organizations to be eligible as core constituents for CORDEG.

This can also encourage other diaspora Gambians to find organizations to which they can associate and align themselves, thus improving the quality and membership of our diaspora organizations.

2. All the political groups, human and civil rights groups, an association of online media operators ( the diaspora Gambia Press Union should be revived), and other groups who registered and are formally accepted will form the constituent body that is CORDEG.

3. All the accepted constituent members of CORDEG will delegate( a number to be determined) their members to sit at a board that will constitute the board of directors for CORDEG. The board will elect one among them to be the Chairman.

4. The board of directors will select or appoint a Secretary General for CORDEG. None of the sitting members of the board can be the Secretary General. The Secretary General will be the leader of CORDEG.

And the Secretary General can be selected or appointed from among the constituent member groups of CORDEG or other competent people outside its membership. The Secretary General will then be coopted as a member of the board and is answerable to it.

5. The Secretary General will then form his/her executive committee. How this committee will be formed or constituted will be determined by the board with input from its constituent members.

6. The STEERING COMMITTEE OR A STEERING COMMITTEE CAN HELP TO PUT ALL THESE TOGETHER.
