G T A Director Harps on Tourism and Security By Madiba Singhateh on 20-10-10
Binta Jobe, managing director of The Gambia Tourism Authority on Wednesday 12 October at the Fajara barracks in Bakau, said her institution has been providing the necessary logistical support to the Tourism Security Unit to enforce their mandate but they cannot do it alone and that they need support from the entire fraternity.
She added that they have appealed to stakeholders in the tourism industry to assist them. She said the support they are asking for could be in the form of providing meals whilst the T S U personnel are on duty, communication equipment and other logistical support. Jobe said safety and security are vital to providing quality in tourism. More than any other economic activity, the success or failure of a tourism destination depends on being able to provide a safe and secure environment for visitors. She added that tourism accounts for approximately 12% of GDP and employs a work force of 80,000. Tourism is an important source of foreign income earning, Ousman Kebbeh of the Gambia Tourism Authority emphasized the importance of training those in the tourism industry. Jobe said security is not just about putting police on the street that it is also about making sure that food is safe, that pandemics do not decimate an industry or that a location’s reputation is not destroyed by prostitution. The Gambia’s enviable position as world class destination offering peaceful and hospitality is among its major assets as a tourist, she added. The chief of defence staff of the Gambia Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Masaneh Kinteh said, “One of the reasons why tourists comes to the Gambia is because of the safe environment. There are two things that are critical in my own perception, the two things are very pivotal, safety and security, and the people of the country. There is no better resource than the people of our country”. Source: Foroyaa
