YOUTHS CLASH WITH POLICE ON BOB MARLEY DAY

Since the demise of the world's reknown musician and reggae ambassador, Robert Nesta Marley, alias BOB, on the 11 May 1981, many youths and reggae lovers all over the world, regard this date as Bob Marley Remembrance Day and have since, then celebrated. But this yea's celebration which is the twenty-fifth remembrance in The Gambia was seriously marred by the interruption at various night clubs by Security Forces. On this fateful night, at the Sukuta Cinema Hall, a few Police Officers from the Drug Squad Unit allegedly interrupted the programme by forcing their way into the hall and arresting those found smoking cannabis. The crowd came to their rescue which resulted in a violent confrontation. According to an eye witness, tension increased when the officers retreated only to return with reinforcement. Sources informed this paper that the reinforcement was also outnumbered by the crowd and were beaten back again. It is reported, however, that when the third batch of reinforcement arrived, dozens of youths were beaten and arrested.
In a separate development at Villagers Bar and Restaurant known as "Car Wash" in Kololi, many youths on similar programmes were arrested by Security Forces and taken to different Police stations. Accordingly, the proprietors of the clubs including a member of the entourage of the visiting Jamaican musician, Buju Banton, were arrested. Sources said that the Jamaican spent about a day and half at the Serrekunda Police Station cell. When contacted the Police PRO, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Aziz Y. Bojang could not confirm any of these incidents.
