BANJUL/BARRA FERRY STOPPAGE Officers Decline To Comment Until MD Returns By Kebba Camara on 08-10-10
Commuters who frequently use the Banjul/Barra ferries were cut off on Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 October, 2010. No ferry was functioning at the Banjul/Barra ferry crossing points. However on Tuesday ports authorities sent a press release to the electronic media houses informing the public that the ferries will not function till around 2pm.
When this reporter visited the Ports, he saw people and vehicles waiting in long queues in preparation to cross to Barra. Until the time this reporter left the terminal, no ferry was in use. Pa Faal who said he uses the ferry everyday said to this reporter that not only has the ferries stopped functioning, they are also getting slower by the day. Mr. Faal said sometimes it takes him more than 2 hours just to cross to Barra from Banjul. “I think the ferries need proper maintenance because it is affecting business,” said Mr. Faal. A student who is attending Muslim Senior Secondary School said he lives in Barra and uses the ferries everyday to go to school. He said most of the time he arrives late because of the slowness of the ferries. He also called on the authorities to rehabilitate the ferries to avoid delays. Several people who talked to this reporter at the Banjul terminal expressed similar sentiments, most of them expressing frustration on how the ferries are fairing at the moment. However yesterday the 7 October this reporter saw a ferry called Kanilai and Johe plying between Banjul and Barra but the ferry called ‘Barra’ is packed at the Banjul ferry terminal. When he visited the Gambia Ports Authority he was directed to the Director General who was said to be out of town. He was later referred to the Deputy Director of the Gambia Ports Authority, Mr Bah. When approached for comments, an authority of GPA told this reporter “We are aware they are complaining but we are doing our level best to make sure that the services are good. You know most of the parts for ferries cannot be purchased here; we have to go up to Europe to purchase them. They should bear with us please,” stressed Mr. Bah. He however reminded this reporter that he was in fact not in town and can’t tell what they would do as at that time. I am also not authorised to talk to the press. I cannot say anything unless I am authorised by the Director General who is not in town,” he pleaded. Source: Foroyaa

I think the authorities at the ferry service need the president's electronic broom. The BJL/BRA ferry service is too important a crossing point to go for even an hour without a ferry much more half a day.Besides both terminals are hot spots for bribery and corruption by the authorities in charge. |

The President will soon go into the ferry business to save the people. He will buy four new ferries and reduce the fair to help the poor people. |
