Frederiksberg City (Copenhagen) of Refuge welcomes its first Guest Writer
September 2010

As the second city in Denmark, Frederiksberg City of Refuge (represented here by Jørgen Glenthøj, Mayor of Frederiksberg, and Per Stig Møller, Danish Minister of Cultural Affairs) welcomed their first Guest Writer, Mr Seedy Bojang, writer, journalist and editor from The Gambia. Seedy Bojang is a published author of both fiction and non-fiction books.

His novel from 2009, Tip of the Iceberg, exposes corruption and criminality among civil servants and the affluent in the Gambia. Among his other published works are Shadows from my Past (2010), Bumpy Journey (2008), set among young African men looking to Europe for opportunities, The Changing World (2006), on social issues in the Gambia, and Devil's Lover (2007), a novel. He has also published The ABC of Journalism (2007), a handbook for journalists.

Bojang is currently working on another novel that he would like to finish. He has difficulties finding a job in his home country due to his open support and call for freedom of expression in the Gambia. He is active in monitoring and reporting on restraints to freedom of expression, and threats and harassment of journalist and writers in the Gambia.

Copenhagen to welcome persecuted writers

23. sep. 2010

Since June Århus has been offering a safe haven to persecuted writers from around the world, and now, Copenhagen will join the list of International Cities of Refuge.
Last Friday, Copenhagen municipality agreed on a budget which sets aside DKK two million for housing persecuted writers in cooperation with ICORN, the International Cities of Refuge Network, writes daily newspaper Politiken.
It has not yet been decided which persecuted authors Copenhagen will house, but the budget will only be sufficient for a single writer.

Five ICORN municipalities
The ICORN network includes 31 cities of refuge across the globe. In order to be considered for the scheme, an author must be on PEN International's list of persecuted writers. The list has around 700 names on it.
In Denmark, Århus, Odense, Frederiksberg, Fanø, and Copenhagen have joined the International Cities of Refuge Network.
