I saw in last night's GRTS TV news that a crocodile was seen and killed at the turntable in front of the Arch 22. Are the crocodiles now invading the wetlands around Banjul?

May be it was on the way to State House.

I think they could have called the fire service in order to rescue the croccodile to another location. Most probably they too would have called the army to shoot it??

Animal cruelty, it is the humans who moved into Croc territory... not the other way round. They could've been nice enough to cage the croc and send it to the presidential palace in the K-village (cheaper than importing them)

They probably attached mystery to it again when the atlantic ocean is just a stone's throw from the arch. some part of the culture is such that many things are seen as mystery when it is normal. They should have returned the croc to the sea. It is sad to see that such species continues to be endangered. There will come a time when their existence will be greatly reduced. That is sad. Where is the late Croc hunter steve? That is why Steve will be missed globally, and not only to the area he focussed on.

Quite so, he (steve) should have stuck to crocks instead of sting rays.

Hi Dalton,

When did crocs ever live in the sea? Come on Guys? I'm quite sure that the last thing the Security forces expected was to see a Crocodile swimming under Arch 22. Let's be honest when was the last time a Crocodile swam the streets of Banjul without an escort?

We can laugh now cause we're all on dry land but let's face facts. If a Croc was swimming down your road would you have the mind to call Gambia's answer to Steve? Or would you shoot the Croc who decided to have you for the main course of its menu?

Peace

Of course crocodiles do not live in salt water in the Gambia! The crocodile was on dry land according to the TV footage.

Sister O, I think the public should be educated to report such cases to the fire and rescue service. When I saw the TV footage, I was thinking to myself whether the guy should have been made to look a hero or should he have been arrested for killing an endangered reptile? The reporter could have mentioned the laws governing wildlife conservation in The Gambia.

The Gambia's concern for the environment and in particular conservation dated back to the 1977 Banjul Declaration, a special statement setting out the country's commitment to conservation. It reflected on the disappearing of wildlife spieces as well as the conservation of the remaining fauna and flora from further destruction.

Banjul Declaration

"It is a sobering reflection that in a relatively short period of our history most of our larger wildlife species have disappeared together with much of the original forest cover. The survival of the wildlife still remaining with us and the setting aside of protected natural habitats for them is the concern of all of us. It would be tragic if this priceless natural heritage, the product of millions of years of evolution, should be further endangered or lost for want of proper concern. This concern is a duty we owe to ourselves, to our great African heritage and to the world. Thus I solemnly declare that my Government pledges its untiring efforts to conserve for now and posterity as wide a spectrum as possible of our remaining fauna and flora." - A statement made by the then President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara (DK) in 1977, aimed at calling attention to the need to protect The Gambia’s quickly vanishing flora and fauna.

Alj. Momodou:

Thanks for keeping up with the crocs on TV. I realized I am not the only fan to Steve (Croc Hunter). lol

I am glad this one was rescued and the team must be commended greatly for the move. Rather than seeing a mere croc as a mystery, I tend to agree that the croc just missed its daily routine, to and from -the river bank and the river.

Having attended school directly opposite the arch, and knowing how close the atlantic ocean is to that exact spot, the later in Abuko would have been more of a mystery (if at all a mystery) to me than the former at the arch turntable. Also, knowing how close to statehouse that spot is, I am not surprised that the former croc was greeted with heavy gunfire, and the later with a chilling reception. It is clearly the mindset. If you take the mindset out of any individual, you clearly have nothing left.

It looks like someone there got the right message. That is why Bantaba is continually valuable.

Long Live our flora and fauna!

Yero, my belief is that these crocodiles might have escaped from Katchikally in Bakau during the years to the nearby wetlands in the rainy season. This is a possibility because it was only the past decades that the pond had been fenced. I remember in the 1970s when the people of Bakau used to dig the pond after a certain number of years. All crocodiles used to leave the pond on the day of the digging.

Women of Old Jeswang were asking for assistance to fence their gardens just a few weeks ago because of the fear of invading crocodiles. One of the women told the reporter that she was once bitten by one crocodile in her garden. These area is the same Tanbi wetlands up to Abuko so there could be more out there.

I doubt though that there are any crocodiles in the Atlantic though.

Could be Jack and Karamba are right that the croc found in Banjul (turntable) was looking for the main man at statehouse. wooooow!

Jokes aside, thanks for the brief history of the croc pool.
