As reported in the Freedom Newspaper, Mr Amadou Samba is going to court against Freedom Newspaper for alleged defamation.... He demands a ransom of Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000.00) and also for the list of Freedom Newspaper sources.
This is without a doubt a very high profile case and will capture the interest of most Gambians as it involves someone who is well entrenched within the circle of the powerful in the country. Someone who owns a pro government newspaper, sacked some of the best journalists in the Gambia most of whom now fled the country and now live in exile. I hope Mr Samba, as meticulous a lawyer and business man he is reported to be, will take a look at the broader picture for his own interest as a businessman, and clearly for the interest of his assosiate President Yahya Jammeh. The publicity around this case will not make them look any less ugly!
Looking at how the state of affairs for the media has been in the Gambia in the past decade or so, with no independent critical newspaper left in the country, and understanding how state security are pursuing independent minded professionals, I will be left with no choice but to stand by Mr Mbai, hoping and praying that he prevails even stronger!
Now lets pretend that Pa Mbai was in tha Gambia operating in the same style as Freedom Editor, and that media laws in the country were not as brutal as they are now, that the state would be there to defend the interest of every Gambian including their fierce critics, and that we will all be comfortable about the independence, the integrity and the fairness of our security agents and courts of law... What a wonderful Gambia that would be.
