We are not sub-human. We humans have no shame to have relationship with another human being. You on the other hand, can be useful as a domesticated animal, a pet.

If a women is an alcoholic when she is pregnant I think that is irresponsible as babies can be born with problems. Like wise smoking and drugs.

Me Me are you infering that I am an alcoholic? I didnt drink during my pregnancies and drank very very moderately when my children were small.

Me Me you always seem to want to make the discussions personal. It would be nice just to discuss the issues in an intelligent and adult way.

Nope was definitely not infering that you are/were/will be an alcoholic but do remember you sharing on this very board some personal information re your ex-husband and thought it rather short-sighted of you to be waving the flag that parents-to-be should be nothing short of perfect before embarking on starting a family .....

Yes, discussing issues intelligently and in an adult way is great but Bev you too would need to do this!

My ex husband was not an alcoholic at the time we had children. Sadly he became one later.

Me me, you are going off topic The issue is about people marrying their cousins. 1st cousins in particular.

I would like to know more about the practise and why it happens.
Is it cultural or religious? Or a bit of both.

Have just looked at the "famous couples" section of this website and think that this may bring more discussion ... but also give more insight into this practice.

Was also heartened by their mention of "erroneous information, bigotry, and presumptions" as this is exactly what I was trying to point out to you, Bev .....

So, you see, there can be intelligent and adult discussion on this site

Children of non-related couples have a 2-3% risk of birth defects, as opposed to first cousins having a 4-6% risk. Genetic counseling is available for those couples that may be at a special risk for birth defects (e.g. You have a defect that runs in your family) In plain terms first cousins have at a 94 percent + chance of having healthy children. Check the links section for more information on genetic counselors. The National Society of Genetic Counselors estimated the increased risk for first cousins is between 1.7 to 2.8 percent, or about the same a any woman over 40 years of age.

Study indicates that, the risk of birth defect of the first cousin marriage 100 percent higher than non-related couples.

Within the Pakistani community in UK the risks of Ist cousin marriages resulting in children having health problems is 1 in 4 children according to the TV programme. Many have eye and ear problems resulting in deafness and or blindness.

Me me I will look at the web site this evening. Thanks for the link.
