Foroyaa Editorial : NATIONAL ROADS AUTHORITY AND KMC SHOULD BE ALERT THE PILES OF MUD ALONG THE SIDEWALK ON MOSQUE ROAD IS A MENACE
By Publisher on 14-08-10

Tar roads, like the human skin, must be nourished daily if they are not to be eroded. For months now construction has been going on along Mosque Road in Serrekunda. Apparently, the road is being redesigned to take drainage into consideration. However, the original drains are clogged. Attempts are being made to unclog them. The mud that has been excavated from the drains is put on the sides. Interestingly enough, the dirt is left to be washed back into the gutters and a part of the debris has settled on the road. It is not only unhygienic for people and problematic for vehicles to move on the dirt, it is also contributing to the erosion of the surface of the road. The longer water stays on the road the greater the likeliness of pot holes emerging.

The KMC should send a technical team to look at the erosion taking place on the secondary road network, stretching from Mosque road down Papa Sarr Street. The road has not lasted for four years and the pot holes are now increasing to become a trench which renders that portion of the road unmotorable.

It is not enough to build roads. It is absolutely essential to have in place a maintenance programme and team which would ensure their conservation. Foroyaa will contact the National Roads Authority and KMC to find out what plans they have to cooperate to save the roads they are designing from further erosion and unnecessary expenditure to repair what could be prevented.

Nothing new here Momodou,we all should know that "projects" are subject to short-cuts and materials that should be utilised not being utilised (in the project in hand !)and "fees" that have to be paid to various people, thereby making the project as initially designed and costed unable to be fit for purpose.

The penultimate paragraph of the piece states :

"The road has not lasted for four years and the pot holes are now increasing to become a trench which renders that portion of the road unmotorable."

The last states:

"It is absolutely essential to have in place a maintenance programme and team which would ensure their conservation. Foroyaa will contact the National Roads Authority and KMC to find out what plans they have to cooperate to save the roads they are designing from further erosion and unnecessary expenditure to repair what could be prevented."

SOLUTION

Maintainance should not be necessary for a good number of years if the project was allowed to be completed as specified by the materials and plans

"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.
