Because, Bev, if you take away the word white from both of the sentences I commented on, the meaning doesn't change! Therefore it was (in my mind!) extremely unnecessary to bring colour into your post!!

I understand your criticism on 'use of white'. That is valid. Not all 'whites' are can be considered potential racist. On theory regardless of color everyone has potentially equal chance to be discriminative/racist. But what you disregard is the reality of power distribution. As a person who happens to be white, you might be a victim in for example Africa where a person who happens to be 'black' has power over you. However, mostly time, the persons how happened to be person who are referred as 'white' holds power over others in more occassions. This is valid for international relationships of nations. Or work place, or politics etc...

Well, blow me down, Turk understands what I'm trying to say!! and I get his point too (wonders will never cease!) but I still stand by my original comment .... if Bev takes away the word white and replaces it with human being then the sentences won't change at all and so she won't be perpetuating the possibility of racial discrimination.

For what it's worth, my pure disbelief in the naivety of Bev's original message is based on logical reasoning .... security in/around any/all Olympic training and accommodation venues will be tight so I doubt they'll allow any Tom, Dick or Bev access (just because she's been to the Gambia on several occasions - as have many of us who post here!). Also, as these atheletes will be here to compete, they will no doubt have to adhere to a strict training regime, so I hardly think a trip to the Jorvik Viking Centre or some shopping on the Rambles will be on the cards (with or without Bev!).

Seriously, if the Gambian Olympic squad were in Istanbul would you be heading over to their training ground to offer them a trip round the Sultanahmet District, Turk? Would you have the nerve to think that they were waiting on your assistance????

I would not seriously think to offer my help, personally I am not that nice, but I would take my daughter to see her Gambian friends and say hi and see Gambian's heroes.

Here is my question, if bev is offering help, why being skeptic? Why is it big deal to make this an issue. I do not think it is an offense to Gambians. People do things for different reasons. Unless, one wants to make her feel bad with the cynicism.

Help may not be required for the athletes but for their family and relatives who come to support them. Or bev is just doing this for her self interests. She wants to meet Gambians. And there is nothing wrong with that. Many Gambians are very hospitable, personally, I do feel like to do something as well for their kindness and love.

This is for people to help in London. I don't live anywhere near London and couldn't take all that time off work.
