I found this,were the officers standing by to prevent a breach of the peace in order to protect those who had been leagally tasked with doing a job? or was ir something more sinister? any comments ?

PIU "Back" Demolition Exercise in Babylon

Unknown individuals allegedly backed by the Police Intervention Unit on Tuesday 11th May 2010 went on a demolition spree in village, knocking down over nine well-built house and fences.
Eye witnesses said the demolishers were having hammers and pick-axes, which they used to destroy their buildings, some of which are near completion and about to be occupied.
"There were about 8 paramilitary officers at the scene some of whom are fully armed. As we approach the scene, they threaten to shoot us and we backed off," residents said.
Villagers alleged that the demolishers and personnel’s of the Police Intervention Unit came in a vehicle with registration number Mo I [Ministry of Interior] 14. They alleged that Pateh Jawo who told them that they are not even allowed going near the site saying that the said land is leased
Babylon village community head Lamin Jarju said the land in question is never leased. He said the land belongs to him and he gave out for benevolence in order for the poor and needy to settle so as to develop the village.
"I spent over D15, 000 to build my house and I have never received eviction notice," a victim Modou Lamin Sanyang told this reporter. "One of the officers told me that the land is part of Lamin and therefore, I must quit."
Sanyang said he went to the Yundum police station to lodge his complain but the station officer Danso told him that the said land is leased.
Another victim of the demolition, Lamin Saidy said he spent over 15, 000 to build his house.
Some of the affected people included Muhammed Sanyang a soldier who is posted at Kudang Military Camp told our reporter in a telephone conversation that he has spent over D43, 000 on the construction.
Alkali Barrow, Essa Saidy, Alimameh Barrow, Kalilu Beyai, Kawsu Jarju and one Tapha also incurred great loses as a result of the exercise.
Police Public Relations Officer Sulayman Secka said he is not aware. "Despite being the PRO, I cannot be aware of every police movement," he said, and referred this reporter to the Commissioner, PIU, Biran Mabai, who declined to comment.

Seems like a typical story in the Gambia. Maybe its one of the Chairman's many 'lands'. Did the police say who the land is leased to ? I would retain and attorney and bring suit all the way to the Supreme court, but I guess that is a farfetched luxury in the Gambia... |

Kay, I read and understand your words when you write " Maybe its one of the Chairman's many 'lands'." I think that is probably correct,again we return time and again to land problems in Gambia,will it be sorted?,I doubt it.
