Anti-Drug Police Clean-up Communities
By David Tronka

The Police anti-drug enforcement agency is committed to the combating of narcotic related substances in the Gambia. Recently, they have stepped up campaigns in strategic localities and communities across the country to clean up dungeons and ghettos that have the potential to breed criminals.

Meanwhile one such community that has witnessed an increase in Police drugs raids is Tallinding. According to an anonymous Youth residing in the Community the police and drugs enforcement officers have really stepped up efforts to clean the community. He said areas that boys used to sit and smoke or peddle drugs have now been deserted thanks to the officers. "Sometimes we see two raids or three in a day or in a week. This has really drastically reduced the incidence of boys fighting in these street corners," he said.

Gibrilla Koroma, a youth activist and a resident of the area, said that it is worth noting that Tallinding is the home to some top government officials, thus allowing criminality and drugs related issues to get rampant in the area is unacceptable. He said that narcotic activities lead to psychotic behaviors that link criminal related issues to drugs abuse.

He decries drug abuse as a social menace that needs to be addressed. He said a lot of sensitization campaigns have gone on the way and lots more are in the pipeline by the officials concerned. He called on Youths that have not yet secured employment to desist from narcotic behaviors and find things to do that are meaningful and legal.

Abdoulie Ceesay, a member of the drugs enforcement agency, said on Saturday in a television interview that the laws relating to drugs will be implemented to the letter.
He said any one caught in possession of illegal drugs will have him/herself to blame.
Ceesay called on the general public to remain law abiding and stay away from drugs or its related issues.

Meanwhile, as the anti drugs Communal Campaign intensifies, boys are on the look out, while Police are leaving no stone unturned.
