Dailynews Editorial: Disappearance Of People: Is It Impersonation Or Otherwise?
The disappearance of people under the jurisdiction of The Gambia is very common these days. This is a phenomenon which is very unfortunate. It is the duty and responsibility of governments to reinforce laws. The security of people under the jurisdiction of nations should at all times be guaranteed by their governments, the failures of any government to guarantee such securities of citizens simply tantamount to a failure of that particular government or governments.
The stories of disappeared people in the country are a great concern not only to the immediate family members of the ones who are missing at the time, but to all who are security minded person.
As the saying goes if your neighbor’s house is on fire you cannot shut your eyes. How can neighbors of these missing people go to bed and sleep, when they do not know if they are not the next person to go missing for life? How can co-workers of the missing people go to bed and sleep when they do not know if they are not the next to go missing, leaving their family and friends suffer the way the missing family members and friends are suffering? How could friends of the missing ones go to bed and sleep when they are not guaranteed if they will not go missing , and nobody will border to find out what has gone wrong with them.
Chief Ebrima Manneh has gone missing since 2007. All efforts were made by colleagues, friends and family members and up to date, whether Manneh is alive or death is yet to be known. His aging parents have cries until they have no more tears to shed, and all to no avail. His story is like the case of the Bwiam three.
Buba Sanyang, Ndongo Mboob, and Momodou Lamin Nyassi were all picked up some four years ago almost at the same time and date in Bwiam village in the Foni. The family members of these three people said their loved ones were said to be picked up by plain clothes security personals. For the past four years wives, children, fathers and all other relatives are living in distress. Such suffering cannot be quantified.
What is the way forward to such a very ugly happenings in our dear country, a country referred to as a peaceful country, a country we called smiling coast of Africa. We must then be fooling ourselves if such ugly things can happen and no solutions were ever found. People’s security must be guaranteed otherwise we cannot call our country peaceful. When we are not at peace with ourselves we can’t call ourselves peaceful. How does one expect the family members of the missing ones be living in peace without their loved ones who are neither death nor are they alive?
The government of the Gambia should do all within their powers and launch a very serious search for these missing Gambians who disappeared in thin air from the surface of the earth. It is the sole responsibility of our government to give us security, as the President always say and of recent GRTS viewers can bear us witness “I will not compromise the security of this country with nothing, and if who ever do not want security you must leave” President Jammeh.
How vehicles with no number plates could come in a village and pick some one and disappeared in thin air? Which routes do they use to get away with their captives without being apprehended by our security forces? Especially now that we have countless check points mounted by both the Police and the Army at every corner of our roads. These check points should stop every vehicle especially this tainted and number less vehicles as in many cases missing people are carried in such vehicles.
Many a time it is the plain clothes security forces, who are accused by family members of the arrest and subsequent disappearance of their loved ones. Here there could be an issue of impersonation. Unscrupulous people with bad intent can impersonate these plain cloth security forces. Gambians therefore must now insist that such people produce documents of identifications before complying with their arrest orders.
By this way the people who come to arrest will be identified by the family members and others. Because arresting officers are people who are suppose to comply with the laws of the country, therefore they cannot object to such demands by people who are to be arrested.
