Gaddafi Ousted as AU Boss

Libyan Leader Muammar Gaddafi
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi on Sunday lost his bid to remain the African Union Chairman. African leaders meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia instead lobbied for Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika. “My Malawian counterpart will replace me and take over but I will continue with my dream for a united Africa continent,” Gaddafi said. African Heads of States are in Addis for a three-day summit with information technology as the main theme. The chairmanship is usually decided on a regional, rotating basis and this year was the turn of southern Africa. Gaddafi was elected chairman almost by default of the 53-nation AU at its annual summit last year. According to Jean Ping head of AU’s main executive body, Gaddafi’s chairmanship has been very harmful to the AU’s image, notably in the handling of political crises such as Madagascar and Guinea.

The Heads of State and government summit is expected to unpack the theme of the summit which has been widely viewed as one of the areas with the potential to enhance the development of the continent. The summit it also expected to focus, as is the case every year, on the continent’s various political crises and armed conflicts, notably Somalia, Guinea, Madagascar, Niger and Ivory Coast. In addition, the summit will discuss the report of the ministerial meeting on the Rome statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The summit will also launch the AU flag and present awards to two African scientists who won the continental science prizes before climaxing into the 14th ordinary session of the heads of state and government summit.
