I think that this organisation should pull its socks up as it appears that there are gaping holes in the dispensation of justice through the Courts.

GBA determined to preserve legal profession

Africa » Gambia
Monday, 25 January 2010
The executive officials of the Gambia Bar Association (GBA) headed by Amie Bensouda, president of the Association, have assured of their tireless and relentless commitment towards preserving and promoting the spirit of the legal profession in the country at all times.

According to the executive members, the legal profession is a noble one like other professions throughout the world and with the strong desire for all its members to operate, uphold and defend its code of conduct at all times. The GBA members were speaking Saturday at a press briefing presided over by Professor Kim Economides from the University of Otago Legal Issues Centre in New Zealand and held in the Gardens of Ngala Lodge at Fajara.

The briefing was part of series of activities marking the Bar Week 2010 scheduled from 22 to 30 January. The week-long programme is expected to be characterised by numerous events in the country such as a seminar on the theme #147;legal practice, ethics and advocacy#148;, a lecture on the role of legal profession in development, a conference on legal practice in the 21 Century, annual general meeting of The Gambia Bar Association among others. The Bar Week is being sponsored by the Legal Capacity Building, a non-profit organisation rendering assistance in the areas of legal capacity building across the world.

Amie Bensouda, the president of the GBA outlined the aims and objectives of the Association, challenges, success stories registered and future plans. She revealed that the GBA aims among other things, to provide legal representation for litigants in the country, dispense fair and speedy justice system, and protect the welfare of Gambians and non-Gambians alike.

Challenges
While describing capacity building as a major constraint for her members, the GBA prezy however, acknowledged the support rendered by the Legal Capacity Building Project to the Association. For his part, Professor Economides gave a detailed history of the legal profession, its importance and the need to preserve and promote its code of conducts at all times. He expressed appreciation and delight over the pace of development of the Gambia Bar Association compared to other parts of the world. The professor was assisted by Robert Hutley Obe, project manager of Atos Consulting.
